Can I Have Your Autograph... / The Bleeding Deacons

The Bleeding Deacons

6-02-07

Song parodies have always been a big part of  the Howard Stern show. Not just ones from Howard, and Jackie, and Fred, but from the whole staff, as well as from the listeners. Dan the Song Parody Man, at one time a mere super fan, now  seems to be making a career out of that fact, and has been responsible for some of the best on the show in recent years. Richard Christy first got the attention of the Stern show with his KC Armstrong is gay parodies, and ended up winning Stuttering John’s job partly because of them. Now we get treated to weekly doses of his cock and balls on Howard TV. Wait, I thought KC was the gay one.  And of course Sal the Stockbroker’s Gary “Got big teeth” Dellabate songs made him a Stern show legend even BEFORE he became Richard‘s lover. Well, a new song parody player has jumped into the mix recently,  the Most Evil Band in the Land and Shrine inductee, the Bleeding Deacons.  The Bleeding Deacons, big fans of the Stern show, took a Mark Harris turd that definitely needed polishing and did the unthinkable: they made it almost listen-able. You can listen to Mark’s version of “I’m a Gay Papa” here (see below) Striking radio gold once, the Bleeding Deacons went back to the well 4 more times and each time they got  recognized on the show for their contribution. I think Howard talked to the leader of the band Daniell it seemed everyday for a week. At one point I thought he was going to replace Eric the Midget as the go to guy.  After the Bleeding Deacons first version aired I contacted  Daniell to see about an autograph and interview.  By the time my “Exclusive” interview rolled around he had told just about everything he had to tell on the air. You can listen to all their appearances (so far) and all of the songs they have done for the show (so far) here. So  you think the Bleeding Deacons 15 minutes are up already?  Think again. The Bleeding Deacons made a song for the Hottest Tranny contest that made the air  and, since doing this interview, I have been told that  their “I am Gay Papa” videos will be shown on Howard TV very soon, so stay tuned.  Earlier today,  I decided to contact Mark Harris to see what he thought of the new versions of his song.  He wrote back and asked if they used his vocals and that he wanted to hear them. Apparently Mark wasn’t aware that someone tweaked his masterpiece a little. We will post  Mark’s comments when we get them. In the meantime please read my interview with Daniell and then if you have the time, have a listen to the entire conversation. They are slightly different.  This is the last transcription I do God Damn it.. Too much friggin work. Thanks Daniell for the interview, and the autographed photo and CD you sent me for my tribute.  I played your CD for my Megadeth rules son and he suggested that you call yourselves Bleeding Deacons because your music makes peoples’ ears bleed. Hahaha  Talk about evil. You ain’t seen nothing until you meet this kid. Say a prayer for me please. Seriously, good luck in your career and I hope to hear more of your song parodies on the show for a long time to come.

Listen to the audio interview here
or continue below for the transcript

Doc: Today you submitted a new song, the tranny song. How many songs  have you done so far?
Daniell: I think we’ve got so far,  I think about 4 or 5.  Three different Sal Gay Papas, the original gay papa, the Happy Days version of Sal‘s, and now the last tranny song.
Doc: Where are you located?
Daniell: In LA
Doc: You have to get up pretty early to be on the show then?
Daniell: Yeah, I didn’t even go to sleep last night, until like this morning.
Doc: You have been on the show a lot, so you have been saying a lot about yourself. What haven’t you said about yourself  on the air?
Daniell: Howard thinks we should go on the American Idol thing. I’d be happy to do it but we are kind of a   raunchy band. I think we would get goofed on for about 10 minutes, then thrown off. But we might submit some material, cleaned up stuff. We are a good band. We have been together a couple of years. We do pretty well in LA.
Doc: You say you are the most Evil band in the land. What are some of your music influences.? (Thanks T600 for the question)
Daniell: AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest. The good metal of the early 80s. Evil was fun.
Doc: I did listen to one track on your site. It reminded me a little of Motley Crue.
Daniell: Those guys made a lot of money.
Doc: Where did the name Bleeding Deacons come from?
Daniell: It’s an old school term . I thought it went with the motif of the band. I thought of the thing with us wearing priest outfits. That gets a lot of attention. That goes a  long way. It’s like the deacon in the parish who don’t like the new guys. That w music these days. There is no good rock. I can’t think of a band I really like these days. There are a couple bands that are starting to sound more rock, but everything sounds so pussy. Every band is whiny, “wahh my girlfriend left me, Wahh.“ It sucks. We want to bring back the good stuff back like the old music. We all got the same musical tastes all the guys in the band so it works out good.
Doc: Do you have any albums available?
Daniell: We  got a ton of songs. Whatever are current set is we sell CDs of it.
Doc: How has your new found Stern fame affected  you sales-wise, appearances…you getting more attention?
Daniell: Absolutely, man. It’s bad ass. One of my favorite  things is reading online like at the SFN. My favorite was this  construction worker who said he was singing” I’m a gay papa” at a Home Depot and didn’t even realize it. I hear like one guy talking, that guy is in Bleeding Deacons. Bleeding Deacons from Howard Stern? Now we are like Bleeding Deacons from Howard Stern. Pretty cool.
Doc: Did you ever consider changing the name like Howard suggested one time to the “Gay Papas.”
Daniell: Ah no (laughs) I actually threw that in as a joke. Hell no!!
Doc: Do you listen everyday? How long have you been a fan?
Daniell: I have been a fan for years, since he first came to LA. I saw him on the  Channel 9 show.  I tuned into one of his most brutal shows. It was when he had that chick with no arms and legs, eating. And they were like goofin’ and we were like, whoa this is crazy. I was hooked ever since. I thought that was the  wildest thing I have ever seen. And then when he came to LA of course I listened on the radio.
Doc: Do you have Howard TV now?
Daniell: I don’t have the Howard TV yet. I was going to get it. Pretty sure I’m going to get it now
Doc: Are there any talks of you going to New York to do a live performance?
Daniell: That would be fucking great. I kind of thought,  the trannies when win they got to treat it just like would Miss America when she wins--you know how Burt Bacherach comes out . Maybe Howard would want to have the Bleeding Deacons come and sing to the winning transvestite.  Plus we could also judge it. How funny would it be to have a bunch of guys dressed as evil priests  judging.
Doc: Especially bleeding ones.
Daniell: Exactly. What we are doing right now is we are shooting a video  for the Sal and the gay papa tunes, the main ones people seem to like the best.
Doc: Maybe you could get that on Howard TV, if you don’t make the live appearance.

Daniell: Yeah, I was thinking that would be good to have it ready for a nice father’s day gift.
to Sal, our favorite gay papa.

One of your members asked if we were you influenced by Cheech from Cheech and Chong.. (Thanks sevenwithcheese)  I never realized I sounded like Cheech. The only influence is in the way I have smoked a lot of pot in my life.

Doc: Any new projects beside the videos?
Daniell: Tickets for our Whiskey show go on sale next Tuesday. You can go to our website, www.bleedingdeacons.com and buy tickets. The show is in September but we sale our tickets in advance. They actually sale out pretty fast. We are with the Atomic Punks that night and they are a very popular local band too. People can go online and get their tickets so that don’t have to wait on line the night of the show.
