Call Legend Captain Janks
03-15-03
|
|
| Intently
glued to the television screen, my wife and I looked at
each other in total disbelief then uncontrollable laughter
while with OJ sitting in the backseat of his white bronco
outside his Brentwood Estate eyewitness Mr. Higgins reported
to Peter Jennings, "Now
lookee here...I see OJ and he look scared." HAHAHAHAHA!!!
Where someone was the exact moment of the OJ car chase is
almost as memorable as the JFK assasination or 9-11 for
most but thanks to a prank phone caller I was laughing my
ass off this time as Mr.Higgins broke a moment that was
"quite tenses."
Today's
featured artist did not make that particular call but he
was the man responsible for making such breaking news calls
popular. Of course Dan Rather would probably say unpopular
but as we all know he is an idiot...but that's beside the
point. The legendary prankster Captain Janks was one of
the first Stern celebrities that I contacted when I first
began building the
shrine almost three years ago and he was quite helpful.
Totally new to the internet I stumbled upon his website
and emailed him my request for an autograph. He wrote back
that he did not have any 8x10s but directed me to his friend's
site, Kenneth Keith Kallenbaugh. A few weeks later Kenneth's
autographed headshot was the first one added after Howard's.
A very exciting day. But I didn't give up on Janks. After
a few more emails failed, plan b was launched. It was my
"wife's" letter
to the show, read on the air, that resulted in two autographed
photos from Howard. "She" struck again sending
a handwritten letter to Captain Janks telling him what big
fans we were. Lady Luck was with us again as a received
shortly after a signed CD cover from the Captain personalized
to the entire family. NICE!!
Love
his calls or hate them Captain Janks has no doubt changed
the face of live news coverage. Watching reports of the
recent shuttle disaster I believe I saw first hand the effect
he has had. While
Captain Janks had his way with CBS and other networks covering
the story, ABC was playing RECORDED eyewitness accounts.
It is no secret that I have always enjoyed a Crank Janker
type call over his type calls as far as repeat listening
goes but if you ever catch Captain Janks or someone he has
inspired in action LIVE like the Mr. Higgins call it will
be a moment in time you will never forget. Coming out of
retirement not too long ago Janks recently started a new
website. I emailed him off of his site with a request
for an interview and the Captain came through once again.
Hope you enjoy.

| Doc:
How long have you been doing prank calls? |
| Janks:
Since 1989. |
| Doc:
Why do you make these calls? |
Janks:
The true fact as to why I do them is that they are usually
funny, and the ones that aren't
are just plain interesting. It's kind of like Real TV in the
sense that the calls are live, and almost never scripted.
They also show the vulnerability of the media which we have
always looked at as invincible. (Or them, at least) People
like Dan Rather are not singled out for a prank. They just
happened to be the network on first, with the need to break
a story before their competitors. Television is a form of
entertainment. I make these calls because they're different.
Just another form of entertainment.
Doc: Is there no limit to the degree of a tragedy you interrupt with a prank call?
Janks: I don't do these calls hoping for a tragedy. I feel the same sense of compassion for other people that everyone else feels. It's a prank call. That's all. |
| Doc:
What do you consider the best prank call you've ever pulled
off? |
| Janks:
The C.P. Telethon. It generated the best response by an on-air
personality (Dennis James) than any other prank call I've
made before or since. |
| Doc:
Have you ever gotten in trouble for doing a prank call? |
| Janks:
I was fined $240.00 dollars by ABC for the call I did to the
"Rosie O' Donnell Show." |
| Doc:
Your calls are in a class all by themselves. Have you ever
done or considered doing calls with more potential for commercial
success like Touch Tone Terrorist and the others ? Have you
ever made any money on your calls? |
| Janks:
The money that I have made has been through appearances I've
done, and a CD that I released called "King Of The Cranks".
But in general, no. I have not made any "real money"
from my prank calls. In other words, I have never quit my
day job. |
| Doc:
What did you think of the TV guide story about you and your
calls? You said on the air that your mother was getting calls
after this hit the new stands. What does your family think
of you doing these calls? |
| Janks:
They support me. They don't listen to Howard's show, so they
really don't have an opinion. |
|
| Doc:
What advice do you have for some of the young upstarts like
Joey Boots for example trying to do your type calls ? |
| Janks:
I like all the Howard Stern calls. Some better than others.
Joey's are funny. I don't have any advice for anybody. I think
someone should give me some. |
| Doc:
A few years ago you and a few other notables were left off
of Howard's birthday party list. I thought this was a big
oversight by the show. How did you feel during this time?
|
| Janks:
I've been to a bunch of them. I can't complain. |
| Doc:
I remember hearing that you felt a little bad pranking Mother
Angelica what with your religious upbringing. Are there any
calls over the years that you regret doing? Ever second guess
yourself after hanging up..."Damn, I should have said
this." Any examples? (what would you change on any of
your calls) |
| Janks:
I have bungled many calls I have done. I don't regret calling
Mother Angelica. I just get douche chills when I hear them.
|
| Doc:
Your calls are always a hot topic of debate. Some say that
they all are in bad taste particularly when death and human
suffering is involved while others were disappointed you didn't
make any calls during 9-11. How do you decide what event is
right to make the call.? Why did you hold off on making calls
on 9-11? |
| Janks:
I was paying too much attention watching the news on 9-11
to pull off pranks. |
| Doc:
How do you get through so often? |
| Janks:
I don't know how I get through so often. Maybe I'm just tenacious. |
|
| Doc:
Where can we hear your calls? Any new cds or projects coming
up |
| Janks:
You can hear my calls thru links on my web
site. I have no new plans at present. |
| Doc:
What has been your favorite time on the show? |
| Janks:
Howard running for governor. |
| Doc:
Who is your favorite on the show? Anyone you don't like? |
| Janks:
I like all of them. Show cast members, and wack pack alike.
|
| Doc:
Any behind the scenes moments you can share with us fans |
| Janks:
Well, one of the funniest behind the scenes moments was at
the filming of Private Parts, during the AC-DC part, when
we were all told to dress as if it were 1983 since that was
when that scene took place. When the director yelled action,
and filming began, Melrose Larry Green held up a sign that
read, "OJ will kill his wife in 94'. We had to re-shoot
the entire take. It was funny as hell. |
| Doc:
Any thoughts on the whole Jackie situation and how Artie is
doing? |
| Janks:
I miss Jackie. Artie is funny as hell. Very quick. I don't
think the show could have found a better replacement. |
| Doc: Thanks Captain for everything and good luck with your future calls. Because of you and your work I am looking forward to our next national disaster..well, the next double murder by a celebrity anyway. |
