| The Howard Stern radio show is scheduled to move to Sirius Satellite radio in Jan 2006 although recent developments have people speculating that move could happen much sooner. Recently it was reported that legendary rocker/paramedic David Lee Roth will be replacing Howard at his morning time slot at K-Rock in NYC, and that move could happen as early as the first week in September. Chaunce Hayden, celebrity journalist for Steppin Out magazine and one time "regular" of the Howard Stern show was the one who first broke that story on Fox News a few weeks ago. Since then it has been confirmed that Diamond Dave will indeed be the man but exactly when is still up in the air. Howard has stated that if he is replaced early he probably will not go to Sirius right away but will take the opportunity to do some traveling possibly to Italy.
I have been working hard on Howardshrine:The Book for months now in hopes of sending it to Howard as a "parting gift" before he leaves the public airwaves, and I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. With just a few weeks away from sending it off to the printer I thought it would be a cool idea to email everyone that contributed one last time to see if they would like to include anything else to the tribute: a quote about Howard, a poem (Kendra Jade), a piece of art (MeanJames), etc. One E! show staffer, who wishes to remain anonymous at this time, cleaned out their desk and sent me a huge box of memorabilia, including a copy of The Chaunce Hayden show with 72 minutes of highlights from his now defunct eYada.com radio show. Never hearing Chaunce's show before, I was pleasantly surprised to hear some really raw, cutting edge and most importantly, entertaining radio. After listening to it I just had to compliment Chaunce on a job well done and tell him that I think he would be perfect for satellite radio. Catching him on instant message, he told me that he will never be on satellite because the powers that be, Howard Stern at Sirius and Opie and Anthony at XM won't allow it. I took this opportunity to suggest that we do an interview and to my surprise he told me to send him some questions. I was even more surprised when he sent back every question answered. Just like when he gargled pee on his radio show (track #17), he took the questions I sent him, swished them around in his mouth, gargled them in his throat and spit out some interesting comments about Howard Stern and what has gone down since he was apparently banned from the show. Was this a good idea? Maybe Chaunce should learn to swallow as some have suggested? Maybe Howard will get mad at me now for giving Chaunce this opportunity. Don't know but I too have a hard time swallowing. Must be a "journalist" thing. Well, anyway here it is and just like Fox news: We report, you decide ...and please don't shoot the pisser. |
| Doc: You were a frequent caller and guest of the Howard Stern show for over 17 years, then suddenly that all stopped. It has been months since you were last heard on the show. What happened? |
| Chaunce: Back in February of 2005, while Howard was on vacation, I received a subpoena from the Security and Exchange Commission regarding Sirius insider stock trades. At first I thought it was Sal The Stock Broker playing a joke. So I called Jason, Will, Gary and Dominic to get advice or to find out if it was joke. They all blew me off. So I faxed it to a friend who writes for the business section of the NY Post. He confirmed it was real and asked me a few questions about it. The next day Howard's face was on the cover of the paper and my days on the Howard Stern Show were over. I spent that week fielding questions from the Associated Press and a few other select media outlets. At that point it really didn't matter. I knew I was off the show and I just wanted to clear my name and also tell the world how stupid the whole thing was. I didn't even own Sirius stock and Howard and I were never friends off the air. So to me, the whole thing was ridiculous. But to Howard it was much more. I'm sure he felt I betrayed him buy sending a copy of the subpoena to the Post . In my heart I thought Howard would find the whole thing as amusing as I did. I didn't take it serious and saw it as an opportunity to add some content for the show and cause some havoc. I wish I could go back in time and do things differently. But I can't. So, my time on the Howard Stern Show is over. End of story. |
| Doc: Recently a guest on the show tried mentioning your name on the air. Not only did Howard bleep your name but he said "We don't like him anymore, Screw him, screw him," How did that make you feel? Do you think you will ever be on the show again? |
|
| Chaunce: I heard about that. It hurts because I have no ill will toward Howard at all. No matter what, I'll always be grateful for the years he allowed me to be part of the show. I have no hate in my heart. Howard did what he felt he had to do. By not allowing my name even to be mentioned on the air I'm sure he hopes I'll eventually be erased from people's memories. And that might be the case. However, I'm a pretty busy journalist. I write for Penthouse magazine, I'm the editor of Steppin Out, I'm a regular contributor to the FOX News Channel, I'm a featured name in Page Six and I'm syndicated in countries all over the world. So Howard might have his work cut out for him if his plan is to erase me. (Laughs) |
| Doc: Do you still listen to the show? Are you still in contact with anyone from the show, and what have they told you about the situation. |
| Chaunce: I no longer listen. I haven't listened to the show in months. It's too painful! Nobody from the show has contacted me. All my good friends (haha) from the show have vanished. Surprise, surprise! |
|
|
| Doc: Recently you broke the news that David Lee Roth was going to fill Howard's slot. How did that come about that you got that exclusive? |
| Chaunce: I won't reveal my source. But it came from someone at Infinity who was very credible...So I had little doubt it was true. So I wrote it up in my Steppin Out "News, Gossip and Truth" page. The next day the FOX News Channel asked me to break the news on "Your World with Neil Cavuto". Which I did....it took balls by the way, because if I was wrong I would have looked like a real asshole. But of course I was right. Howard actually found out about the David Lee Roth deal while watching me break the news on FOX! |
| Doc: What are your plans for the future? Any new projects in the works? |
| Chaunce: Like I said I'm pretty busy doing the celebrity interviews for Penthouse magazine. And of course Steppin Out is a weekly magazine so that takes up most of my time as well. Plus, I'm always doing VH1, "Extra," "Access Hollywood" or one of those tabloid shows. I'd like to eventually take over for Pat O'Brien on "The Insider"..... I'm a much bigger perv than he'll ever be...and I have more celebrity dirt than him. |
|
| Doc: I had the opportunity to listen to your cd from you eYada.com Internet radio show and I have to say I really enjoyed it. I would love to listen to a Chaunce Hayden show on satellite. Any chance of you getting a satellite show in the near future? |
| Chaunce: Thanks. Unfortunately there is zero chance of my radio show ever getting picked up by Sirius or XM. Howard wouldn't allow me on Sirius and Opie and Anthony wouldn't allow me on XM. So it doesn't look good. It's a shame because I really enjoyed doing The Chaunce Hayden Show....There was no show like it before or since... I think even Howard would agree! |
| Doc: What is your relationship with Opie and Anthony? |
| Chaunce: We have a horrible relationship. I interviewed them for Penthouse several years ago. After the interview Opie called me at my office and begged me to change one of their answers. I had asked them who invented "WOW" (Whip them Out Wednesdays) and Anthony answered that they both did together. Well Opie quietly disagreed. So that afternoon he called me and asked me to change the answer to just his name as the one responsible. Which I did. I told that story on Stern a few years later and Opie flipped the fuck out! haha. So it's safe to say they hate me even more than Howard hates me. |
| Doc: Are you still in contact with Beth O? |
| Chaunce: No. Beth falls into the category of "friend" who magically disappeared after all of this went down. But I still love Beth and think she's one of the nicest people on Earth. I wish her the best always. |
| Doc: Is there anything you would like to say to Howard or anyone from his staff or to his fans in this article? |
Chaunce: To Howard I would only say, "Thank you for allowing me to be a part of the Stern family for so many years! I'll never forget the laughter!... I'll try to forget the rest and I hope one day you can to."
To the fans I would say, "I hope that I made you laugh...even while I was annoying the shit out of you. It was always about laughing....always." |
|
| Doc: Thank you Chaunce for this interview and for all the laughs over the years, and good luck to you with your future plans. |
