Can I Have Your Autograph... / The Funnybone

This past Saturday (Aug. 16th), I had the most amazing experience. Rev. Bob Levy and company were performing at the new and improved Funny Bone at Station Square in Pittsburgh and yours truly was invited to hang backstage with the whole gang- this true fan’s wet dream come true. On the line-up and what a strong line-up it was was Bob Levy, Jim Florentine, Nick DiPaolo, KC Armstrong, and the one and only Beetlejuice. I had a HUGE hard-on all day just thinking about it. I had met Jim a few times before and he even stopped by and toured the shrine when in town last but this would be my first encounter with the others. I'm a big fan of all of these guys so I felt very honored just to be in their company. But I also felt an obligation to Stern fans and readers of DeansPlanet.Com to accurately report what all goes on behind the scenes, behind the closed doors, behind the laughter. At the same time I didn’t want to come off too pushy or too intrusive and I hope that's what I accomplished that night and again in this article. Being a Stern celebrity journalist and given such a wonderful opportunity, the last thing I want to do is to pull a Chaunce Hayden and reveal too much so I promised Bob I would leave out all the stuff about the whores and the blow jobs and all the rampant drug use.

Getting to the big event was no easy task. Normally a 35 minute ride in turned into an hour and a half traffic jam nightmare with the Steelers playing host to cross-state rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles just across the river. Finally arriving at the Funny Bone, I gave my name to the man behind the ropes, as instructed, and was quickly escorted upstairs to the backroom. When I walked in The Rev was sprawled out on the floor having his cock sucked by three strange looking black men dressed in…oh wait, I promised not to talk about that stuff…ah….I had spoken to Bob on the phone earlier and he told me that he was concerned some about tonight’s crowd thinking that the Steelers might keep the numbers down (turns out he had nothing to worry about with both shows near sellout crowds and both great audiences). I got to talk to Bob a good 20 minutes or so about touring, about next week’s festival, his new radio show on the web, and even picked up some excellent shrine additions-- 2 handwritten roasts and an autographed 8x10 for Dean -- before the others got there. When the flash on my camera didn’t work, I captured a great pic of Rev signing Dean’s 8x10 with my backup. Good thinking bringing two. I’m a professional, damn it. Soon the others started rolling in. First Jim, then Beetle, then KC. (Wow, does he look young.) After everyone settled in and exchanged Hellos the show soon started.

KC was the first one introduced. One thing that I came away with from this night was that KC Armstrong is a really "NIICE" guy. Listening to the show, I expected to meet a real basket case but he couldn’t have been cooler or more friendly. Of course, I might have seen a different KC if there was no TV in the room. To say the guy has a serious gambling mojo is an understatement. KC and his gambling friend spent the ENTIRE time switching channels from the Steeler game (KC took the Eagles and the points) to the Meadows Harness racing channel. Checking their racing forms, calling their bookies, discussing whether Anaheim could hit against the opposing pitcher in tomorrow’s game, these two were in their glory. Even Rev Bob quipped, "Look at these two. It’s like Oscar [of The Odd Couple fame] moved in with Oscar." KC had a good night backstage winning the football game and a $50 exacta but he had an even better night on stage. The crowd loved him. Torn between watching them on stage and hanging out in the back, I bounced back and forth the whole night. But I made a point not to miss KC’s much anticipated performance on stage and he knocked them dead. "I got one friend who is a degenerate gambler who is also into beastiality. When he says he likes a horse in the third race, it’s a little fucked up." KC has come along way on stage from what it sounds. He used to get booed going on and booed coming off but with coaching from the Rev and Jim- "Add this tagline..Do this joke", " But they hate when I do that one Jim." "Yeah, so?"- KC’s stand-up has become solid and very entertaining.

Next up was Jim Florentine and I caught about 10 minutes before heading back to the room. I mean, lets face it, Jim is a funny guy but it’s hard to compete with watching Beetlejuice try to eat a sandwich twice the size of his head. Beet was drinking water only tonight- I understand he is a completely different person when he is drinking--and I have to say he was pleasant to talk to. We talked about his wife, BabyJuice, not being able to make the trip because she had a gig, a bachelor party in Jersey that night, and we talked about his trip to the Pittsburgh Zoo earlier that day. Not a good trip for Beet with the heat and all the sweat and the smell--"Too much man, too much."
I managed to break away from the Beetle spell in time to catch most of the Rev’s performance and WOW did he deliver. The way he worked the crowd was exceptional. Firing insults fast and furiously Bob lived up to his mean and nasty reputation and then some. Some of the biggest laughs of the night. Great stage presence.

Nick Dipaolo was next up and hilarious on stage but it was his backstage antics with his quick sarcastic wit that stuck out for me this night. During the show one chick stopped by and asked to have her picture taken with KC. The whole time she and KC mugged for the camera Nick was saying, "Lose the top, lose the top (an ill-fitting, ill-advised belly shirt.) As she was leaving he said again to lose the top and then added and lose the gut. Hahaha "I‘m just teasing you, you filthy stinking cunt, you dirty little whore" When the Rev suggested that Nick call into his radio show to maybe start a feature, What’s your problem?" Nick shot back, "Yeah, what’s my problem. That I’m doing radio on the internet?" Funny wop. Check out his site at www.nickdip, not nickdick.com, sometime .

The Rev and Beetle closed the show and had the crowd in a frenzy with Beetle’s special brand of comedy. What part of Jersey are you from Beet? Connecticut. Tremendous show with a great bunch of talented guys. You don’t want to miss this show. I didn’t get to see any of the MC’s act, Chuck somebody, except for a little through the backroom blinds. He screamed a lot, made lots of funny faces and did a good cornholio impression but he had a hot girlfriend that everyone wanted to bang and that is more important than anything.

In between shows I got to catch-up with Jim a little and he told me about his recent time with Eminem. He was flown out to Detroit to record some tracks with Slim Shady in the studio and they even spent 5 hours making calls. He said that Marshall was a really cool guy, very focused and hardworking and the only demand the mega-star made the whole day was that he had to have TACO BELL for lunch. No exception. I also got a chance to tell Jim about Bart Baggett, handwriting expert, analyzing 20 samples in my collection (coming soon!) and asked if he would write me something to have him look over. Since becoming aware of Bart Baggett and his work, autograph collecting will never be the same. I am no expert but from reading his book it was easy to pick out Jim’s large K in his writing. He has the classic "go to hell K" which reveals in Jim’s personality a great amount of defiance; Jim has a strong resistance to other’s authority. Imagine that!!

At one point, I ducked into the room and found myself face-to-face all alone with KC. I said to him "Looks like it’s just you and me." and gave him my best wrestling stance. "What do you want to do, gay it up?" he replied. I took the opportunity to ask him if he knew of my site and he said yes. He also was aware of my column on DeansPlanet.Com but it was not until I repeated my name that I got the surprise of the night. "Sante? I know you dude. You wrote me a really nice letter. I sent you an autograph. You are a cool dude." Unbelievably he had remembered I sent him a letter over 2 years ago asking for his autograph. He told me that he tries to read all his fan mail and responds when he can, that as a fan of Christina Applegate he received a signed photo from her in the mail that left quite an impression on him. He gave me his email address and said to keep in touch. For the first time in my life (well, maybe not the first time) I wish I was gay. Very cool dude. Then he asked me if I was the guy who sent the show a video of me banging some chicks. Not sure what he meant, it didn’t occur to me what he was referring to until later that night. When I first started putting my shrine together Cabbie was one of the first who contributed. I made a 12 minute video of the shrine I called Howardshrine: The Movie and sent it out to a few folks, Cabbie being one. I think it’s pretty funny and maybe someday I will post it on my site. Great score: The shrine doors slowly open just as Everlast goes into his "Hey now oh oh hey now" chorus from that one Santana song Howard mentioned not too long ago on the air. Anyway, I dubbed this video along with the porno Mrsbuttfire on one tape, sent it to Cabbie and then asked him how he liked my movie. Since the lead actor in the porno was named drbigcock which was also my screen name at SFN at the time he put two and two together (as I had hoped) and thought I was the dude with the giant penis in the porno, even going as far as asking Howard on the air if a fan he knew could stand in for him in the Nicest Penis contest. HAHAHA!! A prank long forgotten had reared its giant head again. Just for the record, I’m not the guy in the movie but I do have a very large member, thank you very much.

Peering down into the adjacent bar called The Green Room the comedians took turns goofing on people. After the 4th fat chick in a row struggled on to the Karaoke stage Rev Bob shouted out, "What the hell is going on? Is there a two chin minimum tonight ?" HAHAHA Just a tremendous time that I wish would never end but the night, unfortunately for me, was coming to an close. It was time for me to get some pics and hit the road. My biggest regret of the night was not sticking around long enough to see Bob close the second show. I heard he ate some hiney and it was hysterical as always. But the Steeler crowd was just about to let out and I dreaded another traffic jam. Besides, there was a hot piece of ass waiting to be eaten by me at home. It was Saturday. After saying a few goodbyes to my new friends I headed out the door and down the stairs. I figured I better drain the dragon one last time and made one final stop in the restroom. As I flushed and turned away from the urinal who do I see in the stall behind me, door wide open, but Beetlejuice, his back to me just turned sideways enough that little beetle was in full view. With my camera in hand I had the perfect shot to "cap" off a great night. Should I snap the pic, the money shot? Do it!! Do it!! Naw, I just couldn’t without asking. "Hey Beet can I take a pic of you pissing?" "Naw, man, naw naw." "Ok brother. Taking off. See ya later Pokeman." "See ya later." And out the door I went.

As I walked to my car I kept thinking did I just do the right thing? I think I did, yeah I did the right thing. I got in my car ready for the long ride home, put all my new shrine additions on the seat next to me and settling in after beating all that Steeler traffic I put in my earplugs and hit the play button on my RadioYourWay recorder and listened again to the night’s events. I particularly enjoyed listening to all that talk about Stuttering John and thought to myself, you know I think I probably should erase this recording too…someday. What? You think I have a photographic memory or something? I’m a professional, damn it.!! Hahaha!
