Webmasters’ Q&A
It takes a lot of work to make a web site. You have to want to do it. Well, if you’ve gotten this far in this book, then you know that there are a lot of people out there who not only want to do it, but also want to make their site about Howard. I thought it would be fun to ask some of these webmasters a few questions.

These interviews were conducted individually via the Internet. I have combined them into a single interview for ease of reading. Enjoy!

Howard Gontovnick (HG) is the webmaster for the S.T.E.R.N. Group. Gontovnick is a 41-year-old psychotherapist who lives in Laval, Quebec, Canada. Since Stern’s show was removed in Montreal, Gontovnick depends on WIZN of Burlington, Vermont for his Stern broadcast.

Marshall Hays (MH) --webmaster for the The Rest of Howard is the 27-year-old president of Hays Internet Marketing. His company’s most successful site is www.virtualkiss.com which receives over 5 million page views a month.

Jeff Hey (JH) is the webmaster for SternFanNetwork.Com. He’s a 30-year-old electrician who lives in Philadelphia, Pa. WYSP 94.1 is his source for the Howard Stern Radio Show.

Ryan Freeman (RF)-- webmaster for Ryan’s Howard Stern Site & Webring is a 21-year-old student who lives in Morganton, North Carolina. He listens to Stern on 95.7 WXRC.

Bryan Passifiume (BP) is the Master Control Operatro for CFMT Television International in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and he is also the 23-year-old webmaster for Canada Stern (http://listen.to/howard.in.Canada). He listens to Howard on Q107.

Why are you a fan of Howard Stern?
HG: [I] enjoy the humor.
MH: [HE] says what he's thinking...doesn't censor himself...but I am getting tired of the same ol' stripper interviews.
RF: I am a fan because I love the way he can say anything that's on his mind!!! I want to be just like Howard!!!!
BP: Well, its a cliche - and its sort of a stock answer, but he says what's on the minds of a lot of people - even if they don't have the balls to say it. I certainly don't agree with everything he says, but he's topical, controversial and doesn't get swayed by a lot of the bullshit that people who would rather not have Howard Stern around perpetuate.
How long have you been a fan?
HG: 10 years.
MH: [Since] 1994.
JH: 14 years.
RF: I became a fan when his movie came out. I
never really knew anything about him before then. We just started getting his radio show about three years ago down here, and right when he was on the air I was listening everyday.
BP: Ever since he came on the air in Toronto in 1997 - I
[had] heard of him, but being able to access the show greatly helped me become
a fan.
How often do you listen to his radio show?
HG: Daily.
MH: They dropped him in Dallas couple years ago. People in Dallas used to call the station in
Austin, TX just so they could be put on hold to hear him.
JH: Almost every
day.
RF: I listen to the show everyday ! I try not to miss a single bit of the show, which is why I started taping it (with my VCR) so I could listen over and over. I would skip school quite a bit during the year so I could finish listening to the show.
BP: As often as I can. My work schedule doesn't permit me to listen to the whole show (his brand of humor doesn't go over well whilst working in a Multiethnic television station.) I'd say at least an hour or a bit a day.

Before you became a fan, was there a period of time where you didn't like
Howard? If so, what changed your mind?
JH: [I] always like Howard. Turned out a couple times but always came back.
RF: I've always been a fan of Howard. I might not have known as much or been as involved as I am now, but I always liked watching him on Letterman or whatever.
BP: Yes - I was a very big fan of 97.7 HTZ-FM's morning show. 97.7 is a rock station just west of Toronto, and I was fan of their morning show, Rev and Joe. When stern came to Q107, I swore
I'd stick to 97.7 - bit I gave Stern a shot, and I've never looked back. 97.7 recently fired "The Reverend" Randy Tayor - bad move, because even though I like Stern, Randy was still a great guy and I did tune in during the 10-15 minute commercial breaks.
Have you ever hidden the fact that you are fan of Howard?
HG: Sometimes. I find people often misunderstand that his show is humor oriented. And I do not feel like debating the issue.
MH: No...hard to hide it with a website dedicated to him.
RF: I work at a music store in town and when I was listening to the show while I worked I had to turn the radio down or off when a customer came in. The manager was afraid it would offend someone and get us fired, so I would try and rush the customers out as soon as possible.
BP: That's an unfair question! Sometimes I've found it prudent not to bring it up, but
[I've] never denied...being a listener.
If you could say one thing to Howard, what would it be?
HG: Thanks.
MH: Don't be so money hungry! One of his 'people' called my company and told me how great he thought VirtualKiss.com was and that he could arrange for Howard to talk about VirtualIss.com on the air...for $$$. And to think all this time we thought Howard was talking about the web
sites that he actually liked! Apparently he's more of a puppet than we realized. Pay your money and you can make Howard say anything. LOL
JH: F-Java :) Keep up the great work. We all love ya!
RF: Can I be on the show?
BP: Thanks!
Have you ever met Howard?
RF: The closest I've come to meeting Howard was when this woman contacted me. She wanted some help with her web site (vaginalprocedures.com) and just through conversation I asked her if she'd be interested in going on the Stern Show. She of course said absolutely, so I emailed Dan Wagner and he got me a number (other than the 800#) that I could call and get through every time. She called the number and talked to a couple of different people and finally KC Armstrong called her back and booked her on the show. She called me at home very excited, and we both made plans to go up there and be on the show. I would have just been in the green room but at least I could've done that. Anyway, a day or so after they booked us they called her back and said it would have to be a week earlier, and I didn't have the money to go until the following week so I was stuck at home. She went on the show and talked about her vaginal surgery (to make it tighter) and made some money on her web site. That is the closest thing I've come to meeting anyone on the show and almost got a chance to be in the studio!! Poor me.
BP: Nope. I don't consider myself a fanatic, trying to get to meet him at every turn. I've never called the show.
I've never even been to New York City. I just sit back and enjoy.
Who's your favorite member of Howard's crew and why?
MH: Robin, because she keeps him in check.
BP: Benji - because I can relate to him in many ways. But hey, I think I'm the only one who likes Jackie.
HG: Jackie Martling - I really enjoy his humor.
JH: Jackie. He's just plain funny. The show wasn't the same without him. Favorite all time member was Billy West. Same reason.
RF: Jackie "The Joke
Man"...he's the best.
Who's your favorite member of Howard's Wack Pack and why?
HG: They are all a great bunch of guys. But Hank stands out.
JH: Beetlejuice, everything about him is funny as hell. I don't think he's ever had a bad appearance. They could have him on once a week and I wouldn't get tired of him.
RF: Kenneth Keith Kallenbach. HE's my favorite because he called me up at my house, and we discussed a porn site together, but so far nothing has come of that.
BP: Tough quesiton. I love Captain Janks' phone calls.
Is there a member of Howard's crew or WackPack that you can't stand?
RF: High Pitch Eric. He's just a fuckhead
BP: Beetlejuice. I don't know why.
Besides your own site, what's your favorite Howard Stern web site?
HG: KOAM.com.
MH: [My favorite] no longer exists. The guy took it down back in 1996.
JH: CARLFM.com and KOAM.com are both excellent.
RF: Marksfriggin.com. His site is very informative [especially] if I need a link to a guest on the show's web site or if I miss something on the show.
BP: KOAM.com - in my opinion, the best Stern site out there. Kevin's a great guy and puts together a great site. And he's linked me a few times. I wouldn't even consider putting my site in the same league as his.
What are some of the reactions you have received to you site?
HG: Often I receive letters addressed to Howard Stern from fans who mistake our site with the actual Howard Stern.
MH: Usually have a lot of Howard-haters sending me email telling me Howard is going to go to hell, etc. .Also get lots of requests for Howard's email address. And now it seems people that have been on the show want me to link to them to help them sell their crap.
JH: [Sternfannetwork.com ] is still very new, but I get e-mail all the time from people who think the site is great. I'm really happy about it. Everyone seems to think that it will grow into a real
community of online Stern fans. That would be great.
RF: I haven't gotten much hate mail for having a Stern site and mostly fans have just e-mailed me with questions or comments.
BP: Some positive, none overly negative. No one e-mailing me death threats or wanting to save my soul or anything (too late!).
Do you chat with other fans about Howard online?
HG: Occasionally
JH: Every single day. That is what [Sternfannetwork.com] is about --it's a message forum. The
entire reason for joining my site is you can talk with other Stern fans. We also have a voice chat room, so you can verbally speak with fans across the country. I encourage everyone to join the conversation.
RF: I chat occasionally with fans of the show but not too often.
BP: Never online chat, but I do run the Canadastern mailing list as an aside to my site. Great bunch of people, from Canada and the US.
Do you watch Son of the Beach? If so, what do you think of it?
JH: I never seem to catch it on. I wish I had seen it. I work all day and spend my free time working on this site. After hours in front of this monitor, the last thing I want to do is watch the tube. It's usually time to get out of the house.
RF: I watch Son of the Beach when I can. My girlfriend Amy has the FX channel but I don't. So, when I'm over there when it comes on, I watch it. I think that if Howard wasn't involved with the show then I wouldn't even bother.
BP: Working in a TV station has its advantages. We don't get FX in Canada, but I can bring it in on one of our C-Band satellite dishes, put it through the right recorder and boom! To be totally honest, it was funny, but not as good as I thought it could be. The whole "Airplane/Naked Gun-esque" genre has been done to death. Just look at "Scary Movie" - not too many laughs in that
flick.
Do you watch Howard's E! Show? If so, what do you think of it?
HG: [I] enjoy the E show when Howard interviews interesting guests.
JH: I think the E!
show is great. Same cameras, same everything, just play the whole 4 hour show over the 'Net every day. I'd pay $10 a month to watch the show, unedited. Throw it on and cable and replay the show in the afternoon, and I'd be even happier. That's what I want a Howard E! Show cable channel. All Howard, all day!
RF: I watch E! every night, and I wish that they would play more of the funny bits other than the chicks getting naked and stuff. I mean, I like to watch girls do stuff but that seems to be all there is on that show anymore. Every once in a while they have some of the other stuff on but not too often.
BP: Don't get E! in Canada, so aside from a few pirated episodes on the 'Net, [I've] never
seen it.
If Howard ever retires from radio, what would you like to see him do?
HG: It's his life and whatever he decides. I hope he will continue to offer some form of his radio show.
MH: Lose his hair LOL.
RF: MOVIES,MOVIES,MOVIES... and maybe a Broadway play !!!
BP: He mentioned that he might get into directing films. It would be interesting to see what he'd be capable of.
What's your favorite game that Howard and company play, and why?
HG: [I] enjoy them all. No one favorite.
JH: Stripper Homeless Game. The Homeless Game is damn funny, but hearing the stripper answers is even better. I'd love to make an online version of that game but that's a Stern web site "no no."
RF: The Homeless Game is the best thing!!! I love it.
BP: That "Identify the TV show themes" one, because I love that sort of thing.
If you could pick one celebrity for Howard to interview, who would it be and why?
MH: Kathie Lee just to see if he would buckle.
JH: There have been so many great interviews. Kathy Lee. If she would actually sit down and give a full interview, the action would be non-stop. I'd love to hear her wig out on him and to hear Howard rip her a new one.
RF: Kathie
Lee Gifford. They would end up having sex at the end of the interview [because] they both are attracted to each other.
BP: Tough - He's done all the good ones. Umm. I dunno, Mike Bullard. No, wait. Tom Green.
Do you thing The Losers should put out an album? Would you buy it?
HG: Yes, yes. JH: [A] Napster album...would be great. [A] real album, I could love without.. A CD for the Stern Live performances would be much better. They could throw a track or two on that.
I'd buy that in a minute.
RF: Yes, put out an album. I would buy it!!
BP: No!
Do you listen to the so-called Howard Stern imitators?
JH: Nope. Listened to The Greaseman when I lived at the Jersey Shore. Couldn't tune Howard in then. If he was still around and not up against Howard, I'd listen. As for these new guys Opie and Anthony, I've never heard them. I've only read about them online. Don't even know if they are on the radio in my area. Probably not or I would have heard something by now.
RF: I don't get anything else here but Phil Hendrie and he is not a Stern imitator by far!
BP: Ever since coming to Canada, Howard's let me and everyone else in Toronto know who started the whole "Wacky Morning Show" idea. There are a few in Toronto, but no, I don't.
Anything else you'd like to say about Howard?
HG: Thanks for making me laugh and your honesty. Two qualities that the world really lacks.
RF: Hey Howard, take me to Scores!!!!!!
BP: Don't buy into the hype- I never thought I'd be a Stern fan, but you can't judge a book by its doodie jokes.
At this time I will be taking a break from my column and my Stern celebrity journalists duties to devote more of my free time to adding a third shrine display here at Shrine Headquarters. I also plan on putting more time into my website with more frequent updates and new features including new audio and video...so check back often. And of course I will continue seeking the autographs and memorabilia of shrine-worthy people to add to the tribute. Know someone that needs to be included? Let me know.

In the meantime I would very much like to hear your thoughts on the shrine, my induction , my column, my contributions to the Stern community the last few years----whatever is on your mind. Please email me your comments, maybe your favorite Doc story or moment of the last few years perhaps and I will post them sometime soon.

Have a Great New Year everyone !!!

Peace,

Doc
