Nigger What

My
name is Nigger What…I was born in 1918, and in 1930
I was with my dad. We were in the center of town. I was
only 12 years old. My father tipped his hat to Miss Sally.
Miss Sally came over and gave both of us hugs...This was
in Savanna, Georgia. And then out of nowhere 6 white men
rustled us out in to the fields and they started kicking
my dad and then they started asking him a series of questions:
" Nigger, what were you thinking?" "Nigger,
what the hell were you doing to Miss
Sally?" "Nigger, what are you going to do now?"
<You got mail.> and with that they lynched my dad
right in front of me…..I was only 12. They made me
look and watch the whole thing. They made me see my poor
daddy’s life leave his body. So then afterwards, after
he expired, I shimmied up his body, grabbed his knife out
of his pocket. I cut the rope and I held my father. We fell
to the ground and I broke his fall. I started dragging my
poor father home. I dragged my father home for five miles.
I dragged him for five miles, his lifeless body, until help
arrived. Once help arrived, they helped me drag him the
rest of the way home. It was horrible. < laughter>…Five
years later I ran in to the guy that put the noose around
my father’s neck and I asked him: "Nigger, what
are YOU going to do now?" I took my daddy’s pocket
knife out of my pocket and I kilt that man dead, I kilt
that white man dead…I had my revenge.
This was the story that today’s featured shrine inductee,
Nigger What, told on the Howard Stern show on August 19th,2004.
Weeks before I met Nigger What on the Howard Stern Bulletin
Board where he first shared this story with the Stern fans.
After a call to the show, Nigger What was invited to the
studio. He had gotten his chance to tell his story to Howard
and the millions listening. That day, fighting back the
tears, his voice trembling, he told his story-- while Artie
and Robin laughed and snickered. Robin, checking her email
while he told his story, did not believe him. He was no
DeNiro, she said. Howard said he believed him but was perplexed
by his physical appearance. Is Nigger What wearing a mask?
"Wait until you see this on the E! show." Howard
told his listening audience, "You aren’t going
to know what you are looking at." Unfortunately, that
show never aired and Nigger What was never heard from again
on the show. Weeks later, Howard had had enough of all the
trouble on his Bulletin Board (It became infested with trolls)
and he took the board down. He was done with it. But Nigger
What was not done. Nigger What joined a few fans sites and
continued to try and get his story out. It was on one of
those boards that I asked Nigger What again for an interview
and autograph for the shrine. (I had asked him a few times
on Howard’s board) He emailed me, but not to make
arrangements to send me an autograph like I thought. Instead
he had a request for me. "I am making a comic book
about my story. Will you write the introduction? "
Wow! I felt very honored by his request but at the same
time I was not sure if I was the right person for the job.
Did I really know him well enough I thought? Like for Howard
and the crew that morning, Nigger What was a mystery to
me. It was a very challenging task but I embraced the project
and a few days later I emailed Nigger What my submission.
He emailed me back his phone number. "Call me."
It was awkward when I first called and a woman answered.
Ah….ah.., is Nigger What there? "Yes, just a
minute. I will get him." I had to laugh when one of
the first things he told me was that he was surprised by
my voice -- he thought I would sound older. (People have
been doubting Nigger What’s claim that he is 86 years
old since the first days of the BB) He told me that he loved
my introduction, that it was perfect, and honest and that
he would definitely be adding it to his book. It was then
that we arranged to do a phone interview. I asked Nigger
What to email me some questions he would like me to ask
him. I figured this might be a good way to find out just
exactly what this mysterious man wanted to reveal. I jotted
down a handful of my own questions and on Christmas Eve
afternoon I gave him a call. We spoke for about 40 minutes.
The result I think is a very revealing interview about the
man, Nigger What, and his controversial appearance on the
Stern show. At Nigger What’s request we conducted
a second interview a week later, on New Year’s Eve.

this article I thought it would be cool to get a comment from
the man responsible for the artwork of Nigger What’s
book. I emailed Mean James that request and this is what he
sent back. Days

The
story of the life of Nigger What is a testament to pain
and insanity
I met him on the Howard Stern Bulletin Board what seemed
an eternity ago. He told me his story, but I instantly recognized
the tremendous potential of his words and the full depth
of the insanity of his life. I have always sought to depict
horror in comics as something a little more than the usual
flea bitten zombies and vampires that scare no one as they
cannot suspend disbelief. Fun? Sure. Scary? No. Important?
Couldn't be more trivial. For years I sought venues for
my views on horror, thus my long association with Boneyard
Press publisher, Hart Fisher (publisher of the Howard Stern
vs. Rush Limbaugh parody) as well as the more traditional
venue of famed publisher Joe (Cry For Dawn) Monks of Chanting
Monks Studios. I worked hard with these gentlemen and was
responsible for a number of highly respected books and stories.
Then came Nigger What. The story of his life is the story
of the insane concept of American racism and the extremes
which form the core of its evil. This is horror at its most
basic. Hideous enough to make your ass clench, too real
to dismiss easily. Nigger What's witnessing of the lynching
of his father and the brutality he experienced beyond that
was not simply a tale of real horror, but an important story
as well. The most important project in my comic art career.
I knew immediately we would partner on the Nigger What comic,
long before he appeared on the Howard Stern Show, and long
before he knew as well. When our partnership was solidified
and agreements made, I announced my participation to my
own associates. My publishers drooled and begged to represent
us. Those who've allied themselves with me congratulated
me with amazement, and those who considered themselves my
betters bashed me like jealous bitches. But this is Nigger
What's tale, published under his logo. I am only the artist
and a participant in promotional avenues available to me.
The story of Nigger What is the story of pain we've all
felt, in one way or another. Alienation. And the angst of
being the focal point of the irrationality of shitheads
whose numbers are legion. Amplified to the point of sheer
lunacy. The honor of participation is mine and I present
it to you in this statement. Make of it what you will.

Thank
you MeanJames and thank you Nigger What. Although I feel
like I know Nigger What better after doing this interview,
how I ended that introduction I wrote for him months ago
still says it best for me:
He
remains a mystery to me and to everyone I ask about him.
Is his story real? Is he real? I don’t know. What
I do know is his message is one of peace, love, and racial
harmony and that is something that I can believe in. The
first thing I said to Nigger What all those many months
and thousands of words ago, I say again here: Good luck
and best wishes in getting out your story, my friend.
----
I hope I have helped.
