| Before
the "Hey Nows", the belching and the craziness
begins the Stern show listeners are treated each morning
to one of the many great songs that has been performed on
the show. The Stern show has showcased some great musical
talent over the years. From the music stylings of classic
rock and roll cover bands like The Losers to the soothing
acoustic sounds of James Taylor I look forward to hear which
song Fred pulls to start the show and my day. One of my
personal favorites was performed by today's featured artist
and shrine
inductee, the talented and beautiful Nancy Sirianni and
the rest of the talented and not so beautiful JC, Jack,
and Ted collectively known as The Scoldees. "Happy
Birthday to me, happy birthday to me."Their birthday
tribute song to Gary the Retard became a household Stern
favorite and was #1 with my boys for a very long time- losing
the top spot only recently to Mr. Methane's " I
Just Called To Say I Love You". With a wall now
covered with porn stars, whores, and hot chicks, Nancy was
the very first lady of the shrine. Visiting her website,
I e-mailed her and with tongue firmly in place asked if
she would record a personalized happy birthday song for
one of the boys, her biggest fan. She wrote back that the
production cost would not
make that feasible and politely declined but my quirky request
started a period of e-mail correspondences that ultimately
resulted in me receiving an awesome autographed 8x10 of
Nancy wearing nothing but an opened robe, a hand bra and
a smile and one from her husband, whatshisname. Nancy, despite
a very busy schedule, was even nice enough to hand deliver
an autograph request and SASE I sent her to her then neighbor
Stuttering John..to no avail.
Having
not heard from Nancy in quite some time, just a few weeks
ago I received an e-mail promoting The Scoldees's new CD,
Nightcap World, to be released Feb. 4th. Hmmm... I thought
maybe this would be a good time to see if she would agree
to an interview and replied back with my request. I got
a response back from a spokesman for the band, "Send
the questions and I'll get them to the band- you get two
Jackie questions and try to be creative." Nice!!! I
fired out a bunch of questions including "Who are you
and what made you famous?" and to whatshisname, "Is
there anything you would like to say to Howard and the show?"
HAHAHAHA I knew it would be a long shot but I had to give
it a try. Unfortunately all Stern related questions were
not answered but the final interview I think is a nice little
peek into the world of The Scoldees. Big thanks to Nan,
Ted, JC, and Jack.

| Doc:
How would you describe your music? How has the band evolved?
|
Nan:
This
band evolved as did our friendship from the beginning...out
of a love of song and singing.
Ted: Oh no,
another one that "says he wants an evolution..."
well, you know...
JC: Nancy is
sugar-coating the truth. We were all heroin addicts and met
in the gutter. |
| Doc:
Who has been your biggest musical influence? |
| Nan:
Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, ACDC
Jack: In the
mid 70s, I was really influenced by CSNY, especially when
they did acoustic stuff. When I was eleven I used to love
the Carpenters. Does that make me a dick now?
Ted: The Beavles.
You know, "yeah, yeah, yeah..." |
| Doc:
Who do you personally like to listen to now? |
Nan:
I've been listening to Santana, Nora Jones, Counting Crows.
Jack: I'm listening
a lot to some of the new artists coming out recently that
are blending different styles of music and interpreting and
performing them with new energy and conviction. Artists such
as John Mayer, Norah Jones and Vanessa Carlton are interesting,
it seems like they bring a new sense of youthful maturity
to music, blending it with great songwriting and a 21st century
edge.
Ted: Doobies.
JC: Porcupine
Tree, Aaron Copeland, Jamiroquai.
Nan: Somebody
tell Jack about editing.
Jack: Excuse
me for exercising my right to use conjoining sentences. |
| Doc:
I understand you have a new CD out. What can your fans expect
from this new release and where is it available? |
JC:
Same difference.
Nan: The CD
is available pretty much everywhere. We got us a nice distribution
deal after My Pathetic Life (the first CD) did so well on
radio. Our fans can expect the same shit. Actually, I like
JC's answer, use that.
Jack: Like the
first one, we're kind of all over the road with this new album,
but it plays well when it comes together. Just don't put it
on random play, 'cause it'll go up in flames.
Ted: Tell them
to figure it out, we never play the same thing once. |
|
| Doc:
How long did it take getting this CD ready - writing the songs,
rehearsing, etc. |
JC:
Heh-heh...
Nan: We worked
on this album for a year and a half, give or take a year and
a half.
Jack: You know
when you wake up hungover and you really feel like makin'
an omelette, but you don't know if you've got anything in
the fridge to make it with. So, you end up throwing in some
old deli ham with the last slice of processed American cheese
and maybe adding some mushrooms that you found on the bottom
of the produce draw and it tastes friggin' great? That was
sorta the process.
Ted: Isn't "How
Long" a Chinese name? |
| Doc:
For the fans too far away to go to one of your shows, have
you ever considered doing a "live" album? |
Nan:
We've considered doing a lot of things. And don't give me
that "I'm too far away" crybaby crap. Get on a plane,
you pussy!
Ted: We WERE
"live" when we recorded the album. |
| Doc:
I remember on your website a while back you asking fans to
contact their local radio stations and request your music?
How effective was/is that for you? What can your fans do now
to help promote your music? |
JC:
Hard to gauge that one, actually. Although, it's hard walking
down Main Street in Ottumwa, IA, without signing at least
half a dozen autographs. Fans can support us by
purchasing our CDs, maybe getting themselves a "scoldees"
tattoo or two?
Nan: Our fans
made a big difference the first time around. We had a "street
team" out there promoting, and people did call radio
stations, something that the stations take pretty seriously.
We need even more support now that both CDs are available
in stores. Buy, buy. |
| Doc:
How many gigs are you guys doing now? Any favorite venue?
|
JC:
Heh-heh...
Nan: JC, what
does that mean? We're regulars at The Cutting Room in NYC,
great sound system, nice people. We'll be playing more now
that the CD is done, but trying to concentrate more on music
festivals. |
| Doc:
What do you see in the future for The Scoldees? |
JC:
Oh, more of the same, I suppose... hungover mornings waking
up next to a farm animal... the band trying to sneak beers
into venues that don't permit alcohol... tryin' to get Jack
to do this more seriously... tryin' to get Nancy to do it
less seriously... and tryin' to get Ted to do it less.
Nan: What JC
said.
Jack: I see
more scoldings
Ted: More questions
like, "Is that really the name of your band?" |
| Doc:
Anyone have any opinions on Napster and the whole internet
music swapping situation? |
JC:
Oh, stop. Not you, Doc...them.
Nan: It's wrong!
It's very wrong! You think people are trading scoldees files?
Ted: Don't get
nuttin' for free. |
Doc:
Thanks again guys and good luck with the new CD.
