First a few thoughts on some of the idol news from the last week.

  • Who knew that Pequeno Kevin was such an Egomaniac….Don’t let the door hit ya Kid….
  • The “let’s fire Paula” firestorm continues, I personally think that she should go because her act is tired and she has basically morphed into more of a cheerleader than a critic, that being said, most of her commentary is unintelligible anyway.
  • I’m still freaked out by Barry Manilow’s “Unique” chin implant….Wow.

This weeks installment of AI is all songs from the 21st century…let’s hop right into it.

Chris Daughtry – Regardless of the Controversy this week regarding the originality of his (or Live’s) version of “I Walk the Line”, I thought he gave a great performance, that no one else on the show could touch. The fact that he didn’t correct the judges when they were praising him for his individuality bothers me, but integrity is not one of the qualifying traits on idol. The song he should try this week should be “Higher” by Creed (although I think that it is from 1999) or “Thin Air” by Pearl Jam. He is good at knowing his limits, so I’m sure he won’t do anything embarrassing. But he should try to slow it down a tetch to show everyone he can do it.

Katherine McPhee – I’m as fan of her look and her voice, but she is getting rather full of herself. With Simon’s comparison to Kelly Clarkson, it is apparent to me that she is receiving major pimpage from show producers. I am not saying that she’s not good, just that she is being unfairly pimped. She should try to sing something upbeat this week because, all she’s been doing are ballads, so maybe “Since you’ve been gone” by Kelly Clarkson or maybe “I Turn to You” by Christina Aguilera.

Taylor Hicks – He came as close to crapping the bed as he could do last week, without actually crapping the bed. I hated his stupid little dance and his Forrest Gump suit, so in my opinion, he really needs to step it up a notch to get back on Katherine and Chris’ Level.. A couple of off the wall song recommendations for him would be “Superman” by Five for Fighting or “Harder to Breathe” by Maroon 5, although I think he will try something safe, judging by his song selection last week.

Mandisa Hundley – Mandisa could sing “Mary had a little Lamb” and make it sound good, but (with apologies for sounding like a broken record) I really think aesthetics are going to do her in. What I’m saying is, she is not good enough to overcome her look…those are the facts of life, that being said, I love her voice and she never messes anything up. A couple of good recommendations for her would be, “Beautiful” by Christina Aguilara or “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton.

Elliot Yamin – Elliot is a great singer, he has proven it to me over and over again, but I think he will end up being a jazz guy or another Josh Groban type because he is too good to sing Pop, he also has a problem with aesthetics (those teeth…argh) he has earned his Mr. Tumnus nickname with that little beard as well. I look for him to do something esoteric this week, but you never know what could happen on the big show. I recommend he try something different, maybe “Dance with my Father” by Luther Vandross or maybe try “Lonely No More” by Rob Thomas.

Paris Bennett – I am sick of her gimmick, she is a fidget and I won’t even begin to start discussing the problems I have with her fashion sense or lack thereof. She has been singing old songs this whole competition and having a 21st century night forces her to do something new. I would recommend “I’m Like a Bird” by Nelly Furtado or “I Believe” by Fantasia.

Ace Young – I hate Ace with every ounce of my being, that sonofbug is good looking, has a nice voice, a full head of hair…everything that I can’t stand. That being said, his choice of music has been what has kept him down on the power charts, the last 2 week’s songs have been absolute abortions and I don’t expect to do anything better. His only saving grace is the pimpage laid at his feet by the shows producers and by Seacrest (remember the little girl with the celphone last week). My recommendations for him this week are “If Your Gone” by Matchbox 20 or “She will be loved” by Maroon 5.

Lisa Tucker – Let me get this out…I cannot stand Lisa Tucker’s Stage Mother, she is a camera hog and finds her way into just about every shot of the audience when her daughter is onstage. Lisa is another young girl that has a nice voice, is cute, but keeps singing songs that her mother wishes she could sing when she was a girl. This week she will have to sing something modern. I think she should try “If I Ain’t Got You” by Alicia Keys or “Come on Over” by Christina Aguilera.

Kellie Pickler – Hick Pickler is another one I hate, she really has no talent at all other than her knack for sounding like a barefoot hillbilly. She will probably try to attempt some country song sung by someone I’ve never heard of and the judges will love it because she just discovered the miracle of the flat iron or ate sushi and didn’t like no fish that weren’t fried. She should sing either “Without you” by the Dixie Chicks or “Real Live Woman” by Trisha Yearwood.

Bucky Covington - Bucky’s kind of a foolish pleasure of mine and he’s managed to only escape the bottom 3 once since this started, so his clock is running down. He’s got a real rough voice that doesn’t work for too many styles, so his selections will be limited. I recommend “Heaven” by Los Lonely Boys and “It’s my Life” by Bon Jovi. I wish him well in all his future endeavors.
