Who’s it gonna be?
Welcome to YOUR Top 10 American Idol Recap.
First a couple of show notes:
- - 21st Century Music night, so the contestants can show their modern chops.
- Tough Show tonight filled with mediocre to bad performances.
- I liked the fact that they cut the promos down to a few seconds and streamlined the show.
- Randy and Paula were actually offering up some (and by some, I mean a little) criticism this week. What a miracle.
What was worth watching:
- MANdisa as always, sang her ass off and judging by the outfit she was wearing, she had a lot of singing to do. Man, she really, really, really needs to stay in loose clothes and dresses…the tight jeans absolutely do not work for her, she is not going to win this contest looking like that. “Wanna Praise You” by Mary Mary was an interesting choice, but Simon felt it
was a bit self indulgent. I agree, there was a lot of shouting and while her vocals were good, I was having a hard time swallowing what she was trying to do. She gets the thumbs up from me, but really, only because most everyone else was flat out bad. By the way, the Man-diva thing has got to go, it sounds too much like a tranny name.
- Paris Bennett was decent, but nothing special with her version of a song I really don’t like, Beyonce’s “Work it Out”. She put out a decent vocal performance, but again, the song was not flattering for her vocal range. She still can’t dress (long red sweater, blue jeans and gold medallions) and her hair was silly. She needs to find a song that’s modern and challenges her vocally.
- Taylor Hicks looked like hell, he got one of those pumpkin pie haircuts and was wearing a gray “member’s only” jacket that was in style back in 1984 over some silly T-Shirts. It was better than his Forrest Gump suit from last week, but not much better. He sang a song called “Trouble” which I had honestly never heard before. When he said he was singing a song called “Trouble”, I thought he was singing that Lindsey Buckingham song from the 80’s. Vocally he was on the mark, but he really strained on the high notes. The judges liked his performance, but didn’t like his song choice…I agreed.
What was just there this week:
- Chris Daughtry came as close to crapping the bed as you can without actually crapping the bed…now I was feeling full of myself with his selection of Creed (which I thought he should sing), but he really picked the wrong song with “What If”, which is basically nothing different for Chris. “Higher” would have helped him show more range, but what do I know, I’m not in the bid’ness. He looked great and his vocal performance was good, but again the judges though he didn’t do anything but the same ol’, same ol’. I gotta agree, he needs to expand his horizons. Now I’m not advocating him singing a Celine Dion song, but maybe he should do a song that’s not re-constituted Nu Metal crapola.
- Katherine McPhee sang her rendition of “Voice Within” by Christina Aguilera and it was just there for me. She has a great voice and is a very attractive girl, but her vocal performance was sketchy and a little flat. She doesn’t have a “Christina” range, and it showed. The judges liked her okay, but she was also criticized for song selection. Her dress tonight was just dreadful, it was a brown and tan nightmare….she really needs a fashion consultant.
- Bucky Covington did a respectable version of Tim McGraw’s “Real Good Man”, but Paula had the line of the night, when she said his word pronunciation was not crisp. I felt he flat out warbled the song, musically he was okay and he was dressed alright, but went right back to those real distracting moves with the microphone and his awful shuffle dancing. I felt his performance was decent enough to save him for one more week.
- Elliot Yamin is a good singer, but botched Gavin Degraw’s “I don’t want to be” significantly enough to be moved down to my mediocre category. He was dressed like DMX last night with baggy everything and a hoodie, which looked ridiculous and really can’t dance. Can anyone tell me if he messed up the 2nd line of the song? It seemed to me like he did….
Who Shat all over themselves:
- Lisa Tucker’s Stage Mother bugs me, I know you guys are sick of me saying that, but hopefully, she will be gone after tonight and we won’t be bothered with her anymore. Lisa had an absolutely painful performance of Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You”, she was off pitch most of the song and was visually nervous the whole performance. I sincerely pray that her mother doesn’t beat her after last night’s debacle.
- Kellie Pickler made no new revelations about the purty cee-ment ponds that they have at the hotel that they are staying at and her performance was positively putrid. Horr-awful if I can use that description, she sang (if that’s what you can call it) “Suds in the Bucket” which I have never heard before and if I hear it again, I think I will do something awful to myself. Her makeup wasn’t as disturbing as last week, but she still looked Tranny-ish. Her teeth are WAY TOO WHITE. She will not be gone this week because of her strong “Vote for the Worst” support, but she was as bad as Lisa or Ace.
- Ace Young’s Karaoke-tastic performance of Train’s “Drops of Jupiter” was what it was…flat out bad. The judges didn’t like it either. Ace is the guy I really don’t like and I want him to do bad, but I know he can do better than this….it was rotten. Also, the scar showing thing was just silly. Even the producers cannot hide the fact that he laid a big turd last night.
Who will be in the Bottom 3?
