Before we hit the recap, a few thoughts on the show:
- Simon’s comment about Ryan’s interaction with a “desperate housewife” and subsequent double entendre’ “Lose the Beard” made me spit Corona out of my nose. Simon is all kinds of funny.
- Paula was completely incoherent tonight. She was making improper comments, laughing for no apparent reason and putting her head down on the desk. She has a flippin’ drug problem, I am 100% convinced of that.
- Randy was dressed like Cupid tonight and again had nothing constructive to say to anyone other than the song they chose didn’t do anything for him.
- Kenny Rogers, on top of being scary looking with his new plastic surgery, added nothing to the show. I will say, that he looks nothing like I remember him looking like. Thankfully, no one sang any of his milquetoast country music.
- Overall, I was really surprised that no one broke out with any awesome classic country, it was a night filled with nu-country horsecrap….sad really
Now on to the show….
What Worked For Me:
Elliot Yamin’s version of “If tomorrow never comes” was very good, he was nervous on his vocal, he looked a tad uncomfortable, but it wasn’t awful. I liked his song choice and was happy that he didn’t try to give it the slurpy Garth Brooks treatment, but sang it in his own style. It wasn’t his best performance, but on a night like tonight, where half of the contestants left loafs in the bed, he looked dang good.
Chris Daughtry can actually sing!!! I was shocked that he didn’t try to rock out some country number. He did a good job with the song he had, but I agree with Simon that his selection was boring, however he did show me some depth of performance with this ballad. Not bad, I hope he doesn’t pull a Constantine next week and try to do something real week next week, since he’s shown this side of himself….
What was just there:
Taylor Hicks started the show with his tepid version of a vanilla ice cream song “(Take me Home) Country Roads”. Taylor looked totally uncomfortable singing this song, his vocals were okay, but the song itself has no teeth. I was expecting Willie, Waylon or Hank from Taylor, not John Freaking Denver, HOLY HELL, what was he thinking. I was also trying to figure out why the fiddle player was standing at the bottom of the stage, I think Taylor is starting to believe in his gimmick and that’s not a good thing. He better put that toboggan back on.
Paris Bennett sang “How do I live without you”, Simon liked her, but I thought she was having problems with the song. Her vocals were alright, but she has a tendency of going sharp when she chases the higher notes and that throws the following phrase off musically. She has a good ear and corrects, but that gaffe bugs me. She was just o-tay. She is a fashion disaster, her hair was also a wreck.
Katherine McPhee looked better than I’ve ever seen her look, but she gave a less that adequate performance of “Bringing out the Elvis” by Faith Hill, a novelty record. I don’t understand why a gal that has such a beautiful voice would waste her time with such a goofy song when there are classics out there by Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and even Dolly Parton that have not been done on idol yet. Simon was confounded by her song selection and she mouthed off to him, not a good sign for her.
Who left a little present for the chambermaid?
Kelly Pickler really bugs me, they started out her segment talking about the fact that people see her hick image as a “gimmick” and she said that she is just being “herself”. HOLY CRAP, this insults my intelligence, what is she going to say? That she has been working everyone? Her performance of Reba McIntyre’s “Fancy” was okay, but she had problems with phrasing from the beginning and I thought really she wasn’t that great. Simon said he loved her performance, at that point I started adding vodka to my Corona to try and simulate what he was thinking about when he said how great she was. Her vocals are mediocre, they will never get better. She was dressed alright, but her hair looked silly again and her makeup was still Tranny-tastic.
MANdisa’s performance of Shania Twain’s “Any Man of Mine” was horr-awful, she muffed words, she was sliding all over the place pitchwise and she was wearing a sleeveless shirt….Bad Move. Paula said that she could sing the phone book, I’m not sure what that means. MANdisa had a chance to make ground on her rivals tonight and she blew it. Bottom Line.
Ace Young was just a mess tonight with his version of Keith Urban’s “Tonight I want to cry”. He was all over the place vocally and the only clean part of this song was the falsetto ending. While it was not the worst performance on idol last night, Ace may have sung his last note on this talent show, but stranger things have happened.
Bucky Covington’s take on Gary Allan’s “Best I ever had” was absolutely the worst performance I have heard since John Stephen’s version of “Crocodile Rock”. He was flat throughout the number, he warbled unintelligibly and he was fooling around with the microphone again. Simon liked his performance (which might be a ploy to get rid of him, remember he said he liked pequeno Kevin’s performance the week he left town..) but I didn’t and that’s all that counts to me.
My Bottom 3
