Masseuse To The Stars

Dr. Dot

Dean S. Planet: Where were you born?
Dr. Dot: Manchester, Connecticut (but I was raised up and down the East coast. I went to 15 different schools in 12 years...)
Dean S. Planet: How long have you been a masseuse?
Dr. Dot: At age 5 my hippie mom and dad already had me walking on their backs and rubbing their feet. My mom had the idea of me biting her back as my hands weren't strong enough for her yet. She was a tough woman. You can see videos of me doing my famous Bite Method massage on my web site www.puredrdot.com click on the flaming video camera number 4... So basically, I have been doing massage my whole life.
Dean S. Planet: How did you get the name Dr. Dot?
Dr. Dot: Dorothy is my first name. I was named after my granny, her name was also Dorothy but everyone called her Dot. So I was just Dot up until 1988 when I met Frank Zappa and was invited on his tour to massage him and his band. I refused to take money, I just wanted to be fed and to be able to see every sound check and show for free. Frank kept calling me Dr. Dot. He would say "where's the Doctor?" .. and so of course, it stuck. If he would have called me Dr. Snot, I would have stuck with that to, he is, after-all, my hero.
Dean S. Planet: Where is your business based out of?

with Paris Hilton...

with Eminem...
Dr. Dot: Where ever I am at the time. I never stop traveling. Sometimes I tour with bands (the Stones, Sting etc). I have two apartments, one in NYC and one in Berlin (Germany) - long story. I also go to the UK a lot.. I have over 30 employees now, so my business is world wide now...
Dean S. Planet: Tell us how you became the masseuse to the stars?
Dr. Dot: That is a really long story. I will try to be as brief as possible. My parents raised me on rock and roll and massage was part of our hippie ritual. They brought me to many concerts, starting at a very young age. I got used to going to shows and bonded with rock and roll since I was moving so often, music was really the only continuous thing in my life. When my parents split up, I was 11 and I still wanted to go to shows, even more than ever. They whined that it was getting too expensive, so I would try to scam into concerts with old ticket stubs etc. When I was 15, I lived in Va. Beach, Va and my gal pals were obsessed with Def Leppard. To the point that it was annoying me. They wanted to meet them SO badly. We skipped school and went to the Hampton Coliseum early in the day and found the band wandering around. It was easy to talk to them and I offered free back rubs in trade for us all getting in for free. They thought it was a great idea and were surprised how strong I was. They loved my massages so much that their manager kept asking me to come to the next show and the next (school got in the way in the early days lol!). Anyhow, through word of mouth, I became very sought after. I was called the "Pit-bull of massage" because I really give it my all, none of this petting shit, I kick ASS! (No pain, no gain). Just for the record, I massaged for FREE (well, in trade for entrance and food) for the first 11 years!!

Dean S. Planet: Who was the last celeb you worked on?
Dr. Dot: George Clinton, last night!

Dean S. Planet: Are there any celebs/musicians that you would love to work on?

Dr. Dot: Madonna (she always has a massage therapist with her!), Jim Carey, Beyonce (I know she isn't a rocker, but I adore her and admire how hard she has worked) , Angelina Jolie, Stevie Wonder, Chris Rock, Tina Turner, Matt Groening, Tom Hanks.... for starters.

Dean S. Planet: Who was your favorite client and why?

Dr. Dot: Charlie Watts- the coolest Stone!, Dave Gahan- super friendly and generous, Paris Hilton- honest, she is fucking COOL!, Debbie Harry- funny as HELL! It's hard to choose one, I dig so many of them.

Dean S. Planet: Have you ever had a bad experience?

Dr. Dot: I fell down while massaging Bruce Willis. It was so dark and I forgot I placed a stool next to the table while massaging his face and I did a mad cartwheel and landed on my ass, it was hilarious, but embarrassing. One time a non-famous client lost his glass eye during the massage, it fell out (through the hole with the face goes) and onto the floor. I was like "WTF!???".

Dean S. Planet: You have literally massaged hundreds of celebs. Is there a certain experience that stands out?

Dr. Dot: Burping on Zappa's album "The best band you've never heard in your life" (long story) and no matter how many times I meet them, I tremble when I am around Roger Waters and Paul McCartney. I LOVE them and can't hide it. Also, being able to watch the Stones from the press pit (extreme front row) was an amazing feeling. Having the Stones go down the stairs in front of me, heading to the stage and each one saying "hello Dot" was something I will never forget. Eminem asking me to dance on stage in 1999 in Berlin was really fun. I didn't want to because I was wearing a Dr. Dot massage t-shirt and it just didn't look very hip hop (but I did it anyways, as cool as I could). I sat on Jack Nicholson's lap for a half hour when I was 17 at a party and got chatted up by Bob Dylan at the same party (which was sadly interrupted by his angry female friend) ...
Dean S. Planet: Have you ever gotten so star struck that you had a hard time doing your job?
Dr. Dot: I would never EVER lose my cool while working. "Never let 'em see ya sweat". The only ones my knees shook for were Zappa, McCartney and Waters like I mentioned...
Dean S. Planet: What celeb did you detect was the most tense?
Dr. Dot: Ron Wood! My God the man never holds still LOL!!
Dean S. Planet: And indecent proposals? Marriage proposals?
Dr. Dot: Loads of requests, but I handle them all with humor. "I don't give happy endings. I give UNHAPPY endings!"
Believe it or not, I don't like to date stars, I just like normal guys....and marriage? Oh please! I like sex too much to ruin it with marriage! It's so old fashioned and it usually kills the passion. Not always, but usually.
Dean S. Planet: You also write an Ask Dot column that helps people who are having relationship/sex issues. How did you get into that?

with Sting

with Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong
Dr. Dot: I have been giving advice for years, usually during the massage. Even though I don't like to talk during a massage , I will speak when spoken to and it's usually about a persons love/sex life. Also, my Mom was a fire cracker, I learned a lot about sex from her. Anyways, clients started paying me for my advice and I thought there must be loads of people who could use my advice, and since I can't massage everyone, at least I can help them out with their love life, health, beauty questions etc. I really feel like I am here to help people, put on earth to help and heal. I guess the name Doctor really suits me and Zappa recognized that. I REALLY enjoy helping people with my column and I hope they get a few laughs out of it, cause I have a blast writing it. I literally laugh out loud when I am writing my answers.
Dean S. Planet: How long did it take for you to write your first book "Butt-Naked and Backstage: Diary of the World's Greatest Rock and Roll Masseuse."?
Dr. Dot: I have been writing it since I was 15. It only took a few months to sew it all together when it came out in Germany in 1999. BUT, since then, so many other things have happened that it's twice as big. I have been writing a blog on www.puredrdot.com since 3 1/2 years because I want to share what's going on NOW. I love to write and when I finally get my books published in the US, the blog will just get tossed into Butt Naked. When I go to massage a band, I tell them straight out that I write a blog and that I want to take pictures for the blog and they LOVE it. They pose happily and usually go and read the blog the next day and email me about it. Sting has even told me he reads my blog. The only thing I don't put in my blog and books are my love life/sex life. It would be a best seller, let me tell you, but I think some things should stay private, I don't want to jinx anything lol!
Dean S. Planet: What can we expect from the book?
Dr. Dot: It's kind of like a rock and roll cinderella story. My childhood makes Eminems look like Leave it to Beaver. So there is a lot about my journey into adulthood and by reading that you understand why I am so driven and why music is so important to me. I tell how I went on tour with the Grateful Dead for a few years, dated Joey Ramone and how I toured with them from time to time and basically what it was like meeting every band and star I have massaged. BUT I write it thinking that star is looking over my shoulder as I write it and I know they too will love it. It's a slice of Rock and Roll history. If you read my bulletins, blogs and columns, you know what style my writing is and you know you are in for a good time!

with 'Slowhand' Eric Clapton!
Dean S. Planet: What do you like to do when you aren't working?
Dr. Dot: I am a karaoke WHORE. I love to sing and don't even go out anymore unless it involves me on stage with a mic. I never knew how fun it was until a couple years ago, now I live to sing. It's SO fun, but I would never want to be a rock star, it's too much hassle, all that touring and oh, the groupies... LOL. I also LOVE to rollerblade. My work is so fun, that I don't even consider it work. My friends know that I am a work-o-holic. If I am not massaging or finding massage work for my employees, I am writing. I just never stop. Myspace also takes a lot of my time, but it's so fun!
Dean S. Planet: What is an average day like for Dr. Dot?
Dr. Dot: I go to bed at 6am or later and sleep for at least 8 hours. Then I spend a couple hours on the internet answering about 300 emails per day and loads of messages on myspace. When I am in Berlin, I go shopping and cook every day for my daughter Jasmine (she also lives with her Dad over there). I am a domestic gal over there, and I love that. Then I either massage someone or work out or if I am lucky, go out to sing. It's hard to say what a normal day is like because I am always traveling. Naturally I try to have as much sex as possible, heh heh.
Dean S. Planet: Thanks Doc!! Dot's official blog site iswww.puredrdot.com!! Check out her truly remarkable collection of celebs she has worked on and her unmatched autograph collection!
