The Destroyer

Pro Wrestling Legend

Dean S. Planet: Why do you think that there has been a major decrease in the use of masked wrestlers in the industry?
The Destroyer: All the good mask men in the business always went out of there way to keep there identity a secret. Today with the Internet it would be impossible.
Dean S. Planet: You have been through the 5 decades of wrestling, how have the fans changed and how are they different from the Japanese fans?
The Destroyer: I started October 1954 on Dayton, Ohio T.V. against 6' 7 " 280 lbs, Eddie Albers and had my last in Tokyo, Japan July 29th, 1993 Around the world, and early in my career they were different from state to state. World Wide T.V. changed all that. Now they see what the American's do and they do it. When I first went to Japan in May of '63 as the WWA, World Wide Alliance Champion I wrestled Rikidozan to a sellout crowd, 70 million people watched on T.V. 95% of the paid crowd were male dressed in business suits and they made little or no noise. They would clap if the liked a move but hardly did they boo. Fred Blassie and I changed all that.
Dean S. Planet: You have truly wrestled the great wrestlers of all time including Mil Mascaras, Lou Thesz, and Andre the Giant. Who would you consider your toughest opponent?
The Destroyer: Lou Thesz was a tough opponent because he was tough, could wrestle, in good condition and was left-handed. Rikidozan was powerful with great balance from Sumo and very un-orthodox!
Dean S. Planet: What would you say to people who think that wrestling is a fake and that nobody gets hurt?
The Destroyer: I make many speeches around the community, Lions Clubs, Rotary Clubs, Masonic Lodges, sports banquets etc. and the first question I give them before they ask is, " Wrestling is not Fake", it is show, it is entertainment it is any name you want to give it but "IT IS NOT FAKE" During my 39 years in wrestling I had about 8500 hundred matches and I took all my own bumps, slams, back drops, turnbuckles, over the top rope, you name it. Fred Blassie used to say kid your taking too many crazy bumps. I never had a stunt man come in and take my bumps and no wrestler I know had one either! I wish wrestling was fake, and then I wouldn't have all the pain in my joints today. I also tell this true story told to me by the commission Doctor in Portland, Oregon. One of his patients is a young 4-year-old girl who was knee dropped by her 6-year brother off a top bunk bed. The father yelled at the 6 year old! The little boy answered, " DADDY YOU SAID IT WAS FAKE " What we do in the ring is not fake!
Dean S. Planet: What do you think about the extremely violent angle that all of the major federations have taken?
The Destroyer: They don't need the violent thing! WRESTLING SELLS if you know how to wrestle and most of today's talent cant wrestle. They are not taught it!
Dean S. Planet: What are your thoughts on Vince McMahon?
The Destroyer: Vince Mc Mahon killed the business as I knew it 50, 40, 30 years ago. In 1955 there were 50 wrestling territories around the country. I know because I wrote the all to get booked and received NO answers. We could end up with one territory in 2001, WWF and what a blow that would be for the wrestlers of today.
Dean S. Planet: Which of today's wrestling superstars would have been a force to be reckoned with in your era?
The Destroyer: All the top boys today could have made it in my era!
Dean S. Planet: In your opinion, who are the top five wrestlers of all time?
The Destroyer: You pick the top five. I'd be honored if I was close!
Dean S. Planet: And finally, is there going to be a comeback match someday?
The Destroyer: At 70, I don't think you're going to see any comebacks by Dick Beyer, The Destroyer or Dr. X! They had a great career, enjoyed every minute! It not that they couldn't do the job in the ring, but who is going to get them out of bed the next day. The only come back you'll see is come back to the dressing room.
