Tom Mabe

Comedian & Phony Phone Caller

Dean S. Planet: Can you remember the telemarketing call that made you decide to seek revenge, or what is just an accumulation of them?
Tom Mabe: The first TM company that made me decide to do this CD was MCI, I got tired of them calling me more than my "Friends and Family" did.
Dean S. Planet: Have you had any legal action taken against you by any of the callers even though they were calling you and invading your privacy?
Tom Mabe: Legal action, all the time. But where I live it's legal to record a call as long as one party knows it's being recorded. But when they see my CD at Wal-Mart they start to freak out and want money.
Dean S. Planet: After I heard your 1st CD, I was inspired. This guy called and said that he was calling people in "my area" area for a special offer. I asked him," what area would that be", he paused said, "Pennsylvania". I said, "That's a pretty big area, that should take you a long time" and I hung up. Can you give people like me any basic advice on how to annoy telemarketers?

Tom Mabe: Yeah, to annoy them..... Tell AT&T you don't have a phone, tell the replacement window company you live across the street from the post office and you want something in a Bullet proof glass, tell the people selling home security system you're robbing the place right now and they should call back cause these guys can use one.

Dean S. Planet: Do you have a script you work with or do you come up with the jokes and insults on the spot.

Tom Mabe: Script? No, that's the TMs. I do have ideas in my head of what to say when they call. I set around thinking of things all the time.

Dean S. Planet: Which of your phone calls is your favorite?

Tom Mabe: Favorite call? "Beep" and Low self esteem off my new record, round two. I also like crime and the carpet cleaner off my first CD.

Dean S. Planet: What do you think of the Jerky Boys?
Tom Mabe: I loved their first CD; I was a little disappointed in their second. And I can't understand why their movie didn't win an Emmy. Na, those guys have sold a lot more records than I have and I think they rock. But I record people who call me.
Dean S. Planet: Have you done any stand up comedy?
Tom Mabe: Never done stand up.
Dean S. Planet: Do you still get a lot of telemarketing calls?
Tom Mabe: Yes, about three calls a day.
Dean S. Planet: Do you think that Jerry, the guy from the first CD who tried to sell you replacement windows got fired?
Tom Mabe: No, Jerry didn't fired. I called his boss back and told him what I was doing.
Dean S. Planet: If I may, I would like to ask you a technical question. What equipment do you use to record your calls?
Tom Mabe: I use a really bad machine to record my call, but it's better than other things I used. It's TCR 100 from radio shack.
Dean S. Planet: What is the most important thing we can all do to stop telemarketing calls?

Tom Mabe: Tell them to put you on their "Do Not Call List!" You have to say that! Also, tell them to send you a copy of the policy too.
Dean S. Planet: Why do telemarketers always come up as unavailable on my call waiting?
Tom Mabe: I have no idea; I think they have a deal with the phone company.
Dean S. Planet: Do you still have the same phone number that telemarketers used on the first CD or have you changed it?
Tom Mabe: I changed my phone number cause people were calling me to pretend to be telemarketers, trying to get on the new CD. "Mom, I know this is you!"
Dean S. Planet: What are your plans to promote the new CD?
Tom Mabe: Lots of radio, I do about 22 phoners a day. (Call into radio and promote the heck out of it, they know I'm calling.) You just can't call up and promote that you have a dog for sell, "He's only 13 yrs old!" and he's almost house broken; I want $900 for him.
