Interview With E.G. Daily

With her multitude of talents and her extraordinary versatility, it's more than likely that E.G. Daily was always destined for Hollywood stardom--even if she wasn't so damned adorable. A natural performer, she first began acting before the age of 10, and her "California girl" good looks and inborn ability soon landed her an agent. It wasn't long before she made her professional debut on television, in a 1979 episode of Laverne And Shirley . It's hard to believe that was more than 25 years ago, especially when you consider the woman is STILL a knockout. She's had an amazing career, and it only seems to get better as the years pass.

If I sound like I'm gushing a bit, I suppose it's because... well, I am gushing. I've had a major crush on E.G. ever since she graced the screen alongside Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman in Valley Girl , a surprise hit and her breakout role as an actress. Her performance as Loryn, a naive valley girl, won her critical praise and legions of fans. Two years later, she starred opposite Paul Reubens (aka Pee-Wee Herman) in Tim Burton's first film, the classic 80's comedy Pee-Wee's Big Adventure . I should think it wouldn't be easy to play Pee-Wee Herman's love interest, but E.G. managed to pull it off quite nicely. The end result was a movie that became an enduring hit, and lord knows I've watched it plenty of times during various stages of inebriation. What can I say? I love that flick.

And when I say E.G. Daily is multi-talented, I'm not kidding. Maybe you're familiar with her work as a singer as well. Remember that scene in Better Off Dead , with E.G. singing the title song onstage in a very short dress? I sure as hell do--in fact, I think I became aware of my impending puberty when I saw her in that outfit. (Oh man, there I go again.) You might have noticed E.G.'s voice in the Summer School movie, too, singing a song called Mind Over Matter --which went on to become a Top 10 hit. In addition to that, she had another pop hit, ( If You Want My Love ) Say It , as well as plenty of other songs on various movie soundtracks. For what it's worth, I happen to love her singing voice; man, you've gotta dig a sexy woman who can sing. It doesn't get much better than that.

But surprisingly enough, E.G. is probably best known these days for her extensive work as a voice actor. She voices some of the best known characters in animation, everything from the Tommy Pickles character in Rugrats to the voice of Buttercup from the cult classic cartoon The Powerpuff Girls . She also lent her voice to the title character in Babe: Pig In The City , among many, many others. I'm not exaggerating when I say "many, many others," either. Take a look at her profile on IMDB.com and prepared to be dazzled. What an amazing woman. If I wasn't such a loser, I'd try to date her. Then again, maybe she's into younger, horribly insecure men with goofy hair... who knows?

E.G. continues to work in pretty much all facets of entertainment, and today she's busier than ever. She still does plenty of work as a recording artist, and
you can buy her CDs at her official website.(www.egdaily.com) She also recently performed on the stage in a one woman, autobiographical musical she conceived entitled Listen Closely . And yes, she's still acting--she last appeared in Rob Zombie's The Devil's Rejects and another movie, National Lampoon's Pledge This! is in post-production as I write this. That should be an interesting one, because she plays
Paris Hilton's mom in the film--and E.G.'s ex-husband is none other than Rick Salomon, who appeared in the infamous Paris sex tape. Now, any longtime reader of
my column would know I'm not much of a fan of Paris Hilton, but I'll bet that her and E.G. had some really interesting conversations on the set...

So, yes, E.G. keeps pretty busy--and I'm flattered that she'd take the time to do an interview with an anonymous Internet writer like myself. To her credit, she was entertaining, nice, and very tolerant of my pathetic attempts at flirting. Here's how it went down;
Jeremy the Loner: First off, allow me to say something, if I may; I am completely, pathetically thrilled to be interviewing the same woman I've had a crush on since I was a geeky adolescent. I'm all aquiver over here. You probably get a lot of that from male fans, don't you?
E.G. Daily: All aquiver, eh? I like that! Your lips or your whole body?
JTL: Uh, I think I'd better plead the 5th on that one.
E.G. Daily: Any how, I must say I have had the coolest fans. Men, woman, kids, adults, gay, straight. I think it's an awesome thing to have a crush on someone 'cause they do something that rocks your world. And if they happen to just like how you look, how flattering!
JTL: Before we get really underway here, what name do you liked to be addressed by, E.G. or Elizabeth? I'd hate to look like an idiot by calling you by the wrong name during the entire interview.
E.G. Daily: I go by E.G. Daily mostly now.
JTL: Ahh good, I guessed correctly. So, you've been acting since you were a kid. How did you get into "the business" at such a young age?
E.G. Daily: I was about 8 years old when my best friend Michele got an agent. Next thing, my mom got me one. I didn't know what the hell I was doing, but I began learning. I did start taking lots of classes. Singing, acting in school, that was really the beginning for me. School plays and musicals. Then at 14, booked a national commercial, then at 16 an episode Laverne And Shirley ... the rest is history.
JTL: I must say, I've always loved your singing voice, too. It's sweet, with just a bit of a raw edge. Are you self-taught as a singer, or did you get training for it?
E.G. Daily: I was in singing classes very young, as well as absorbed things about every singer I loved. Then I didn't take classes for a while, just explored
with my voice. Then I took 'em again. I had one teacher who taught VOCAL BIOMETRICS. His name is Warren Barrigian. Not sure how to spell it. He taught
me the most, freed my voice up the most. Taught me not to be afraid to use it! And boy do I use it!
JTL: Tell us a bit about your breakout role in the film Valley Girl . I just watched it again recently on DVD and it still holds up really well. What were your impressions of young Nicolas Cage? And whatever happened to Deborah Foreman, anyway?
E.G. Daily: Deb's really a sweetheart.  I don't see her that much, but she is always up to doing something amazingly creative. She does graphic design that would
blow you away. I think she might still be acting, too. Back then, she was an amazingly creative, very committed actress. Nick was in his early stages of really wanting his OWN identity. It was a cool thing to see that was right about the time he changed his name. A really funny guy and super driven back then.
JTL: Did the success of that film take you by surprise?
E.G. Daily: YESS!!!! It was REALLY low budget. I think we wore a lot of our own clothes. And no one really knew the director Nancy Coolage yet. She was really
great to work with.
JTL: Most people my age got their first real exposure to you when you played Dottie in Pee-Wee's Big Adventure . Was that a fun movie to make? And what was Paul Reubens like when cameras weren't rolling?
E.G. Daily: Paul was calm and sweet, and between takes hilarious!!! Everything was cool about that movie; the sets, the childlike look, the director Tim Burton. And Paul is a genius.
JTL: How was Tim Burton as a first time director? Did any of you get a sense of "Hey, this guy's going to be a great director someday?"
E.G. Daily: Who knew? We knew he was on to some crazy brilliance, but again, you never know what's going to be a hit .
JTL: We all remember what happened in 1991, with the "Pee-Wee In The Adult Movie Theatre" scandal making headlines. What was the FIRST thing you thought of
when you heard the news?
E.G. Daily: I felt like it was no one's business.

JTL: Can't argue with that. I loved your appearance singing the title song in Better Off Dead , one of my favorite comedies of the era. Plus, you looked gorgeous in it, so that's a bonus. What did you think of the finished film? I heard John Cusack wasn't too happy with it.
E.G. Daily: I think it was another hit. I get so many e-mails still about that film. I thought that was one of John's breaking roles. Hmmpp, who knows?
JTL: Weren't you originally supposed to play the character Demi Moore ended up playing in the follow-up to that movie, One Crazy Summer ? What happened there?
E.G. Daily: NO, I wasn't going to do that ...so ... I don't know what happened .
JTL: Must have been just a rumor, I guess. So how did your career as an actress and singer segue into a career as one of the most sought after voice actors on the planet? I've checked your filmography on IMDB.com, and I had no idea you did THAT many voices.
E.G. Daily: It was a fate thing... voice over was just beautifully meant to be. Did a play, someone saw it, he thought I did really good voices, gave me his card... the rest is history.I love doing voices, it's very freeing! It's truly a blessed gig.
JTL: Does it ever get tiresome to have people constantly saying to you "Do Tommy Pickles' voice! Do Buttercup's voice!" I can't even begin to imagine how often that must happen to the actors from The Simpsons .
E.G. Daily: It's ok! At the right times, it's a great gift to get to do it for people. But, of course, when you are having a private moment with your child or friend it's not so cool to have to beak it out .
JTL: You had a memorable guest role on Friends near the beginning of the show's run. What was it like to try to fit into an ensemble cast? And what was the
atmosphere on the set like?
E.G. Daily: They were like in their own machine. A tight ship. Then I walked on the set, laid one eye on the director, my childhood crush Robbie Benson and that was all I needed. The cast was cool. Friends was a great gig .
JTL: I caught your performance in The Devil's Rejects , Rob Zombie's sequel to House Of 1000 Corpses . An intense movie, to say the least. What was it like shooting that film? And which do you prefer as an actor, comedy or horror?
E.G. Daily: I actually did a lot more stuff in that movie that might end up on the DVD,  Zombie said. That was an amazing time. Rob was genius (there's that word again). I like all film, comedy and drama. The more period the film, I love it. I like getting lost in the sets and other casts, like Bill Mosely in Devil's , he was amazing. I could totally get lost in that land.
JTL: So, what new projects should we be on the lookout for? Fill us in!

E.G. Daily: Go to www.egdaily.com. We are editing the DVD version on the one woman musical I did all year. It's really cool. Got some new music as well as the
Soundtrack to the play Listen Closely . It's all on my site. Also, a bunch of new films in the can coming out. Whites Air, Cutting Room, Pledge This with Paris Hilton, Mustang Sally's and some other stuff ... Blah blah blah, you get the picture .Go to the site for updates!

Lots of Love,
EG DAILY

JTL: Thanks so much to E.G. Daily for doing the interview, for getting back to me so quickly and for being such a great sport. I think it's safe to say I enjoyed this interview more than most of the others--and it's safe to say I still have a crush on her, only now I'm an adult geek as opposed to an adolescent geek.

For more information on E.G. Daily, check out her website: www.egdaily.com

I know a lot of you out there love her just as much as I do. Admit it.
