Of Tomorrow's References

I went into this flick with no real knowledge of it and I didn't have any expectations. But from the opening scenes I knew this was going to be one to remember. After I got past the fact that Gweneth Paltrow was one of the stars, I was quickly mesmerized by the style and cinematography and it's hard to believe that this entire movie was done via blue screen. Oh yeah and the robots, they kick arse. Over all though, I am fascinated by all of the references sprinkled within the movie from Star Wars to King Kong. I only spotted about 20 percent of them, so I spent all last night looking them up on my compie and I feel like I need to share this vital information with you, the Mark My Words loyal readers. There aren't any spoilers listed below, just some things to look for. Here are some of the cool references that I found.

  • Buck Rogers - there are a lot of his comics lying around
  • The Wizard of Oz - 1 there are metallic versions of the flying monkeys and a hologram of the mad scientist's face which resembles Oz (played by the late Sir Laurence Olivier 2 Paltrow's character meets a scientist at Radio City Music Hall where its actually playing,
  • A.I. - Another film starring Law, his character's name is also "Joe" (Gigolo Joe)...
  • The Titanic - I think I saw it in the underwater scenes
  • Godzilla - There was a blurred out pic of him in a newspaper headline from Japan...
  • THX 1138 - The door on a scientists lab reads "Suite 1138...
  • Citizen Kane - While looking at photos of the villain mad scientist, she sees a pic oh his home which is actually a pic of the castle in Citizen Kane
  • Star Wars - 1 Cap's plane is in a swamp. As he makes his way to shore, a lizard like creature slithers in the water, which resembles Luke in Dagobah; 2 When Captain in granted permission by Jolie's Royal Navy, the controller responds with "Permission granted to land on Platform Three-two-seven.", Captain responds "Thank you". This exchange of words are the same as when Millennium Falcon reaches Calrissian's Bespin...
  • Jurassic Park - Cap and Polly climb across a log while being chased by a pterodactyl type creature..
  • King Kong - 1 Cap flies by the Empire State Building, Kong can be seen climbing..2 In another Empire State building scene, Cap's plane seems to "climb" it 3 Cap is underwater in his plane when he passes a ship that sunk named The Venture, which is what brought Kong to America... 3 also, Kong's cage is also sitting on the deck...
  • Marathon Man - Near the end when the Totenkopf was broken up, Cap asks, "Is it safe?" which also happens to be Lawrence Olivier's famous line from the movie...
  • War of the Worlds - 1 The laser-beam sound effects of the robots are identical to those of the alien ships... 2 When Polly is reporting on the robot invasion, she describes the event as follows: "They've reached Sixth Avenue... they've reached Fifth Avenue... they're a hundred yards away...". The same lines are used in "The War of the Worlds" broadcast.

There are a bunch more but these were the most interesting ones in the film. Have fun watching the flick!
