The Subways Interview

How did you all meet, and how long have you been playing together?

Billy: Josh and I are brothers so we have known each other our whole lives, but Charlotte and I met at the local swimming pool. I knew that I wanted to be with her as soon as I saw her.

Who would you say influenced you the most on an individual level, and who influenced you the most as a group?

Billy: I think Kurt Cobain has always been a big influence on me. The way he did what he wanted and just loved to rock out. And he had an urge to be honest and genuine which I can relate to. That's why I find it being easy to play with Josh and Charlotte because with these two beside me I feel like I can let go and put it all down on the table. As a group, the biggest influence was Oasis really. I saw them play a song on Top Of The Pops and I knew that I had to play the guitar from then on.

Do you mind when you're compared to other acts out, either past or present? I personally am reminded of The Vines when I listen to you guys (and a little Nirvana in Rock and Roll Queen)

Billy: No way I love the bands a lot of people compare us with. I think it's healthy to realize that bands can affect people that way and influence them to pick up a guitar and sound like them. A lot of bands are scared to admit their influences and try to shrug them off but the music we listen to has affected us and made us the people we are. It's very important to us.

I'm not sure if people have made the Sid and Nancy comparisons yet but I'll go ahead and throw it out there (sorry if it's been mentioned alot). Do we have a new S&N on our hands with you two (Billy, Charlotte)? And are you (maybe Josh specifically) worried about what may happen with the band if they were to breakup?

Billy: I think Josh is not really bothered as long as he still gets to play the drums! But that's the first comparison with Sid & Nancy we've had so far and I like it. I love Charlotte and the music is the most important thing to us, it's our baby.

Since we aren't too far in to this year, what would you say is your biggest goal as a group for 2006?

Billy: Touring the album in America is very important to us. We really want to build a great sense of community with the American audience, especially since a lot of bands that we really love have come from this country. Playing America and having a great time is what we really are looking forward to doing this year.

Who came up with the concept for the Rock and Roll Queen video? Many bands try over the top videos to make up for a crappy song I suppose, but this video was a great change of pace from that, and basically just hits you in the face with the song. Great job.

Billy: Thanks! Well Charlotte and I were big fans of the director - Paul Gore - because of his recent work with other bands and his techniques with using light and live performance. We really just wanted to rock out and have fun and we sure did that.

What's the wildest thing to happen at a show you've played?

Billy: Every night is wild! But I suppose the wildest would have to be when we toured Germany and at one show a girl ran out of the audience and onto the stage and just did this swan dive over Josh's kit and started kissing him to death. We had to pry her off and re-assemble the kit and get back on with the show. Fun times!

Out of bands out now, or any kind of artist, who would you say you have the most respect for and really admire their work?

Billy: I'd have to say Madonna. Her ability to keep making the albums and do what she wants to do and love it is just amazing. To hell with everyone else, the music is most important. I've heard some wild stories about her in the past and I have total respect for her.

And last but not least, when are you coming to kick America's ass with some shows here? I'd love to catch one.

Billy: Well we're mid-way through our current 23 date American tour and having an awesome time, but we'll be back in May and we can't wait. Come along and have fun!
