The 2008 NYC Comic Con
--> The Word Archive

Ahhh comicons... Much more than comics these days. Hot chicks and big name celebs can be found in attendance, you can pocket a lot of cool stuff (both free and for sale) and the people watching is at its best. And if you are from the old school and insist on keeping it real, people in bad costumes, geeks & comic book artists are still around.

My main goal this year was to be able to get close enough to Eva Mendes to at least get a nice whiff of her, but that didn't happen. The fact that she was attending was plastered all over the NYC Comic Con website, but in order to see her and maybe get her autograph, you have to get there really early to get a ticket. And those were very limited.

Also promoted as major attendees were the cast of Hellboy 2, Seth Green, Frank Miller of 300 & Sin City fame, and the Harold & Kumar guys. None of these guests were anywhere to be found. I tried to get into the Hellboy 2 discussion with the cast at the IGN Theater but it was FULL and the wait to get in was LONG. I chalked it off as another loss and ventured back into the nerd fest in the main area.

My dogs were barking so I took a seat to see the NY Jedi, a group of Star Wars farbs who put on a lightsaber show on a side stage. Halfway through the show I noticed a bunch of photographers congregating around an area hidden in the corner, to the left of the stage. I knew something was going on... I made my way over there and there was the entire cast of Hellboy 2, including legendary director Guillermo del Toro! I couldn't believe it, I was 20 feet away from Ron Perlman, (Hellboy), Doug Jones (Abe Sapien) and Luke Goss (Prince Nuada, the new villain) and Selma Blair (Liz). Now I have always thought that Selma was cute but damn, she looks 100x hotter in person. As I was snapping pics paparazzi style with my arm raised over my head I was thinking, now THAT'S a movie star. This was the highlight of the day for me. I got some decent shots, check em' out:

A little disappointing this year was the the lack of 'B' celebs signing autographs. In 2008 I got to interview Hayden Panettiere and meet Ray Park, Gary Coleman and the kid that played a young Boba Fett in 'Attack of the Clones'. This year, they only allowed comicon staple Lou Ferigno in the door. Incredibly (no pun intended), the line to meet him was consistently at least 30-40 people deep. At this point, who hasn't met the guy yet? My guess is that they let him in because they are releasing the second Hulk flick this summer.
