Over the past year or so I have been really getting into MMA or what I like to call it, mixed martial arts. There are a bunch of new 'companies' that have sprouted out trying to co-exist with UFC, which I always thought was the big leagues. One problem I see is that MMA is very hard to follow watching it on TV alone. They broadcast a lot of different shows on TV from various events and dates so you really don't know what is current and what isn't. Pardon the analogy but it's not like pro wrestling where you can watch every week, see new cards and follow what is going on.
I like what Elite XC is doing on their new CBS Saturday Night Fights, which premiered on May 31st. If they could show some new fights twice or at least once a month, that will really help the sport and allow people to follow what is going on. I loved all of the fights but there were some really shitty parts as well. First of all it was at least 45 minutes into the show until you actually saw a fight! The main event didn't start until damn near an hour and forty minutes into the show! They would come back from a commercial, show one of those stupid vignettes and then go to another commercial!! I say next time, cut this into an hour and a half show. Sure you need some vignettes to build the fight but this was ridiculous.
They really did bring out the big guns that night though. Gina Carano, aka Crush from American Gladiators and the one of the hottest chicks in the world came out and kicked some ass without even training that hard. They definitely need to get a belt for her to defend. And how she can keep her balance with that rack of hers baffles me. If Hef could get her to do a layout, I would renew my subscription for 5 years as a sign of gratitude.
Also on the card was who they called an 'Internet sensation', street fighting legend Kimbo Slice. Here's a guy who is now fighting in the ring due to his popularity on You Tube. The guy has no skills other than brawling but somehow found a way to win against a more experienced fighter. No doubt though, Slice will meet his match much sooner than later.
And it's funny to hear critics of the sport talk about Slice. The ones who think MMA is more than merely an all out street fight say that he embarrassed the sport. Anyone else who just likes to watch pro fights, loved it! I was more angry at the fact that they couldn't find a better fighter than James "The Colossus" Thompson to throw at him. They mentioned earlier in the show that one of the fighters on the same card beat Thompson recently. And it would have been nice to see someone fight Slice who didn't have a massive califlower ear, well more like a water balloon-like ear waiting to explode when hit a couple times. The dude looked like the monster from The Goonies. No doubt Elite XC put a fighter in there who was experienced enough for people to say he was a worthy opponent but weak enough to throw to this pit bull of a man.
